i ADAMS EXPRESS GOOD ONE HALLENBECK RACER BEATS BAND OF BEST HORSES IN KENTUCKY. Stare Scores at Long Odds and Other Carman Horses Arc Sharp Contenders in Other Races at Churchill Downs, " Louisville, Ky., October 4. The stable of H. C. Hallenbeck continues to lie successful at Churchill Downs. The Hallenback colors were borne to victory by the much-improved Adams Express in the feature race of todays card. The impressive manner in which the colt scored over good opposition made it plain that in his present form he easily outranks the other three-year-olds hereabouts. R. F. Carmans Starbottle was the runner-up. with the lightly-weighted Any Port third just in advance of T. M. Green. The latter maintained a fast pace during the first three-quarters, but Adams Express, had jockey A. AVrispen so desired, could have passed -into the lead immediately after the start. The jockeys orders were to wait with the colt until the stretch was reached and the rider had his hands full in carrying them out, as the colt was decidedly unruly. He came with a rush when called on in the stretch and "passed into the lead seemingly without much effort. Starbottle made a game bid in the last furlong, but was no match at the end for the younger horse. Any Port closed like a cyclone in the last half mile and handily disposed of T. M. Green near the finish. The Kentucky Derby winner of 1908. Stone Street, figured in a performance in the closing dash that stamped him as a really good plater. He was the favorite and was opposed by a smart band including Arcitc, Sam Barber, Force and others. In the first quarter, Stone Street seemed a forlorn hope, as he trailed alone almost a sixteenth behind the leaders. His backers feared that he had little chance of landing in the money, but the horse electrified his onlookers by steadily picking up his opposition and, though forced to go wide on the stretch turn, he overtook them nil, finally passing Arclte iu the last few strides. Ho was given a rousing reception on his return to the judges stand. The Carmau horses .cut a prominent figure in todays racing, Rogon, Starbottle aud Arcite landing iu second place iu the respective races in which they were starters, while Stare, the. extrcmo outsider to win during the afternoon, was also from the Carman stable. Stare was not considered seriously even by his stable connections, but Rogon and Starbottle were extensively supported. Rogons defeat was especially costly to a host of short-priced, fanciers. He ran as if short and was beaten by Royal Captive; There was some dissatisfaction in this race on account of the judges placing County Tax in third place, as it. appeared to many that De-laney had beaten him for that portion of the money. Silver Knight won the third race, after a sharp drive to dispose of Camel and Henry Hutchison. Sandrian was the medium for heavy support in this race, but suffered interference, which contributed to his failure. At that, his showing today was an improvement over previous starts. Henderson and Hogans Bredwell, a former winner here, was lieaten handily in the fifth race by J. N. Camdens Merode. It was the first purse that has gone to Mr. Camdens credit during this meeting. -E. R. Bradley today transferred the contract ho held on the apprentice J. Allen to G. M. Johnson. The rider will accompany the Johnson stable to Juarez, for the racing there the comiug winter. Trainer George Walker has severed his connection with the F. J. Pons stable and will likely be sue ceeded by James S. Evcrman. Among a number of horses to be disposed of by auction on Friday next in the paddock at Churchill Downs are Milton B., Shapdale, Dune Campbell and Fort Johnson. II. G. Bedwell returned today from Laurel, Md.. and reports that the plant there is in excellent condition, except for the heavy track. Francis J. Pons, after a conference today with sot-eral of those interested in the Charleston, S. C. racing project, left tonight for a short visit at Laurel, Md.. from which point he will go to Charleston for a final conference with his associates, and if matters are found satisfactory, Mr. Pons will proceed with the building of the track and have it completed for racing over by January 10. According to Mr. Pons, there is some opposition, but he thinks it can be overcome when he explains that the racing he Intends to give will compare well with any in the country. Trainer P. M. West will take Spalding. Freckle and G. L. Doyle to Mexico City at the close of the-Churchill Downs meeting. The remainder 6 L. P. Doerhoofcrs string of racers, including his recently acquired yearlings, will be shipped to Latonia and later to Juarez. Tommie Thompson, which has been on the ailing list, will winter in Kentucky. Lew -Marion, formerly well known as a successful trainer, contemplates "re-entering racing on an extensive scale, having been given carte blanche by a wealthy Chicagoan to purchase such horses as he may consider desirable. In the event that Mr. Marion is able to secure serviceable older horses, he will race - at Juarez, hut in the event that ho can get only young material, he will winter in Kentucky, Dr. Millers Sidney R. was among todays arrivals from Toronto.
