PENOBSCOT IS SOUNDLY BEATEN. Winner of Walden Stakes Is Led in Allowance Race at Pimlico By Turbine. Baltimore. Md., October 20. Richard T. Wilson, president of the Saratoga Association, whose two-year-old Penobscot won the Walden Stakes at Pimlico last Saturday, saw his colt soundly beaten this afternoon. Incidentally, the defeat of the colt provided the sensation of the day. Penobscot has been regarded by horsemen who raced iu Canada -this season as the best youngster of the year. He was restrained on two occasions to allow a stable companion to win, and last Saturday he won with ease, although the race was not truly ruu on account of E. Dugaus recklessness. Today Penobscot was an overwhelming choice. When the barrier went up. Guy Burns, who was astride Thomas Clydes Turbine, was on the alert and had the colt away well in his stride. He quickly gained an advantage, while Biggins was slow to get away with Penobscot. Burns hustled his mount along and ojiened a gap. while Diggins seemed unable to get Penobscot settled into his stride. On the far turn Penobscot ran into a contending iosition and was second entering the scretch. but just when everybody thought he would take the lead Penobscot hung and seemoil to quit when his rider called on him. Some trainers attribute Penobscots defeat to Diggins anxiety in the tlrst part, but it looks as if the colt is not what he has been cracked up to be. The Wilson Stable figured in another interesting incident when Onager took the third race, a calling affair. Onager won with Billy Vandcrveer second and Sherwood third. C. C. Smithson, owner of the latter, who ran up Altamaha. a Wilson winner of a few days ago, promptly started bidding on Onager when the horse was offered for sale and ran him up to ,500. Trainer Healey bid him in with the customary advance. He sought to get even by claiming Billy Vanderveer from T. . Oilman for ,215. William Garths Andy Cuisholm, the champion three-year-old jumper of the Canadian circuit, started today for the first time at Pimlico, itnd as his trainer declared, "left a trail of wreckage behind him." Andy went so fast that Ringmaster and Sir Watson fell and Juverence, the second horse, could never get up. Thomas Fortune Ryau took another purse with his good filly, Belle Nelson, which had no difficulty in winning. Trainer Carter declares that Belle Nelson is a better filly than the sensational Wonda-why, which raced well in Kentucky last spring. A "good thing" went wrong in the last race when Brandy, heavily backed, could get only third money. Brandy ran a winning race, but was unfortunate at the start and In ,the ruunlng. - There will bo a sale of thoroughbreds iu the paddock at Pimlico tomorrow. Among the horses to be disposed of are those of A. II. Morris, including Chilton, sire of many winners, and the broodmares lie has had on his farm at Middleburg. Md. Fred Littelfields Jubilee, winner of many races, Chry-seis, a two-year-old winner at Pimlico, and others. Harry Rites lias received from William I.owry, of Sussex, N. J., two maiden three-year-olds by Flambeau that are said to be promising, lie will at once put them in training. Nat Byer will ship the horses lie is training for P. S. P. Randolph to Jamestown.
