IMPROVEMENT IN NORFOLK CONDITIONS. Better Fields and Better Weather Add to Enjoyment of Racing Montcalm Wins from Stilly Night, Norfolk. Va.. November .". There was a decided improvement in racing conditions bore today. For one thing, the weather was more agreeable for outdoor sport, then again the fields were letter balanced and of better quality than on the opening day. Close finishes attended most of the races, that in ihe third, for two-year-olds. Ieing especially so. when Coming Coon beat Gitt by the smallest of margins. Jockey McCahey was in great form during the afternoon and the Fltzsimnions clientele profited handsomely. McCahey. piloted threo winners, Lo-chiel, Spin and St. Joseph. Liberal odds were quoted against the last two. Spin being at 12 to 1 and St. Joseph at 6 to lk With the improvement in the weather came a corresponding improvement in track conditions, the going being firm and fast, as the time recorded goes to indicate. The feature race was a dash of six furlongs, in which some of the fastest sprinters here went to the post. Stilly Night was the public choice and she ilattered her backers by showing plenty of early speed and racing head and head with Montcalm into tne homestretch. In the. Mast quarter Montcalm drew way and at the end had an easy lead of two lengths ever the Whitney filly, which weakened badly when it came to a drive. Only one of the starters in the steeplechase met with "mishap. This was Lizzie Flat, which unseated t-t rider at the last jump but one. Vilhalla, the Avinner, fenced ltoldly and had good speed when Allen gave her her head. Shelby, favorite of the fdxth race, was heavily played by his owner and friends, but bled during the race, which accounted for his poor showing. Several stables arrived from Laurel this morning, among them the big string owned by J. L. Holland t Albanv, which came in charge of John Powers. Hilarious recently purchased from James R. Kecne. was among the lot and he has been named to start in the Exchange Handicap tomorrow. W. B. Carson and W. T. Anderson are expected with their horses in a few days. Frank Tavlor wired from Latonia that he would leave with H. C. Halienbecks string November S, and a special stable has been reserved for him. Jockey Butwell, who has been riding in Russia during the past season, was also au arrival. But-well got Into trouble In Russia on account of rough riding and was under suspension when he left. The xuspenBlon, however, has expired and Butwell will make a written statement to that effect to the stewards tomorrow. He will provo a welcome addition to tho ranks of the riders here. The fast colt Bob Vernon, in J. L. McGinnis stable, died this morning of fever, which he contracted while being shipped here from Pimlico. The weights for the military race to be run tomorrow wIH not be announced until morning.
