Closer, a top-heavy favorite, won the five-furlongs sprint for two-year-, olds by a narrow margin from Lady Rankin and Calisse at Juarez today. It was a nip and tuck race through the stretch between the. three young-1 sters and it was only in tho last fifty yards that Moore managed to get Closer to the front. Calisse acted as pacemaker all the way, but she tired badly in the final sixteenth. A surprise was sprung in the fifth race as Goldfinn upset the calculations of the wise brigade and won with ease from Quartermaster and Delaney. A few in the know backed her price from thirty down to twelve, and cleaned- up handsomely. It was ladies day and despite tho fact that the, weather man was not on his best behavior, a large representation of the fair sex was on hand. J. T. Ireland sold Marsand to J. W. Levy of El Paso this morning, the terms of the sale being priv ate. Mr. Ireland intends disposing of all the horses he lifts in training here just as soon as he can secure buyers at his figures.
