: : j , , i CAIMAN DIES IN AUSTRALIA. Wo learn from an Australian exchange that Caiman recently dropped dead in his yard ai the Dan mouth Stud in New South Wales. Foaled ill 1806, he was an American -bn d hois.-, and was imported to Victoria by the late William Mctutlocli. and after serving a few seasons at Woodlands, was sold shortly after the death of Mr. McCuUocb to B. Allen for 800 guineas. He was by Locohatebee son of Onondaga, from Happy Day. by Coernleas, from Roslnr-ville. by Creinorne. from Vcrtuiuna. by Stoekwcll. from Garland, by Langar, from cast steel, by Whisker. He came from the same family as Oalli-nule. Fpas. Sir Finite and other successful sires, but although a good performer in England, he could hardly be termed a stud success. Wheal lure he was the property of the late Lord William Beresford. and as a two-vear-old won three races, including the Cle»rwell Stakes and the Middle Park Plate. In the latter race be beat Flying Fox. with which he started eipial favorite. As a three year-old. however, the "Fox- conclusively proved himself his sujierior. for he easily disposed of him in the Two Thousand Guineas and the St. I.eger. Between those two events, however, Caiman won all the half-dozen events in which be took part, and among them wore the Payne stakes at Newmarket and Imperial Slakes at Linglield. He was not so good in his third season, and only won once in a half dozen essays, that being in the Linglield Park Stakes, in which race he made the mile lime record 1:334. On the dealh of Lord W. l.i resford Caiman was sent up for sab at Newmarket with the rest of the stud, and knocked down to R. Marsh I acting" I. r Lord Wolvor-ton for 2,900 guineas. He proved a bad bargain, for he scored but once again, though lie was oal eight times as a five-year old. He was well 1 ached on several occasions, and go; within a neck of San-toi for the Kempton Park "Jubilee" and ran second for the Grosvenor cup it Leicester. He carried Lord Wolvi rtons colors the following year, but only won him a 1O0 sovereigns plate at Baydock Park, and thereupon found another owner in A. James, who gave 760 guineas for him under the hammer at Goodwood. He ran twice unsuccessfully for Mr. James and made his la-t appearance in the Quarndon Plate at the Derby November meeting in 1002. — London Sportsman.
