useful threeyearold in the winter of 1011 at Juarez in the hands of the western trainer Dick Benson BensonLocal Local trainers were grieved by tho news of the death in Germany of James II McCormlck He was at one time connected with the California stable of Burns Wateihouse with which he had great success He frequently won as many as three races a day with their iiorses he having while in their employ one of the handiest strings ever gathered together His greatest triumph with any one horse was with Ilermis when that brilliant performer was a threeyearold He induced L V Bell to pav 13000 to II M Zieglw for this colt His first success with him was in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga and from that on the sensational performer was not beaten as a threeyearold The following season Mr McCormick sold the horse for Mr Bell to E R Thomas for fiO X 0 When the latter dis ¬ persed his racing string Mr Ziegler liought back His great horse and he is now in the stud in France Mr McCormick raced Saturday has little if any bearing on the Kentucky Derby to be run off at Churchill Downs on May 11 The winner of tho Charleston race Jawbone is not engaged In the Kentucky Derby and none of the niost promising of the Kentucky Derby eligibles have raced at Charleston The only three Kentucky Derby cligiblos that went to the post in the Palmetto Derby were Cracker Box Flamma and Duval and while Cracker Box and Flamma fin ¬ ished respectively second and third in that race the fact that they were beaten by Jawbone docs not speak well for their chances at the Downs in May when they will be called on to meet such stars as Worth The Manager Presumption and Sonada SonadaThe The winner of the Palmetto Derby is a son of Samson quite a good threeyearold in 100i dtv veioped by Charles Hughes
