SHANNON A GREATLY IMPROVED COLT Tho news that Herman B Duryeas threeyear old Shannon is temiwrarily out of training because of a mishap met with just after a notable victory over AV K Vanderbilts crack Montrose II in an important stake race in France last week is received in regretShannon this country with regret Shannon Is a much bettor racer now than at any time last year Experienced turf students rated Montroso II last year as at least fourteen pounds better than Shannon It was known however that Montrosc II has not made much physical improve ¬ ment over last year while on the other hand Mr Duryeas colt has Shannon which must not lie confused with the fiveyearold of that name which recently reached France in the IlUdroth establish ¬ ment is practically an American colt though ac ¬ tually foaled iff France because his sire and dam were mated In this country in the spring of 1908 and UIKMI tho enactment of tho HartAgucw laws that year Me Duryca sent his entire stud to France In 1909 Shannon was foaled there At the head of this stud is Irish Lad sire of Shannon The dam of tho youngster is Census by Ethcll crtf out of Calculation by St Florian out of Reckon It will be seen that on all sides Shannon comes from royal parentage Mr Duryca was in midoccan when his colt won the 10000 stake in which he defeated Montrose II and had barely landed when he was informed of the accident which tho racer sustained by running away Shannon awayShannon is not engaged in the Grand Prix do Paris though Montroso II is Mr Durycas crack colt Sweeper II also is not eligible to tbe Grand Prix but is looked upon as a dangerous candidate for the Epsom Derby now that Moiitrose IIs two recent defeats have appeared to put a damper upon Mr Vanderbilts colts chances in the Epsom race raceIrish Irish Lad sire of Shannon broke down during the running of the Brighton Hajulicap of 1104 when he was beaten only a few inches by Broomstick in that recordbreaking performance Broomstick still in this country is the sire of Sweeper II a Derby possibility whilo Irish Lad his stubborn opponent on tho turf maintains in France his struggle for supremacy at the stud
