eighty years is still able to be around the Downs Every morning he may be seen watching the racers in their trials Mr Thornton not only has been present on every Derby day and attended the Ten today He said he was pleased with the excellent condition of his racers which are trained by Peter Coyne Mr Long said that if bis Derby horses Nicias and Free Lance meet with no mis ¬ hap lie will be represented in the big race raceLew Lew Marion who has returned to the turf with a string of horses this season after a year or so of idleness trained for Dan Ilonig when that turfman raced such famous horses as Van Lelan l Lelex Cartoon Leo H and Mamie Hunt Previous to this he had trained for Beinherit Wright who raced Barnett and other good performers After leaving Ilonig Marion became connected with a Ten ¬ nessee racing firm and while in their employ dcvel OIKM the famous filly May Thompson which he sold to Senator OBrien of Minnesota for 15000 When he quit this stable he took charge of the horses of Chris Smith and in one season he won with the Smith horses j OO He had charge of Yo Tam bien when she won the 20000 Garfield Park Derby and then for a year he left Smith but returned to take charge of his horses when Yo Tamhicn was a fiveyearold and that season the great mare was again almost unbeatable During the years lie was with Chris Smith ho trained the horses of this stable in conjunction with John Huffman thc latter handling one division of the string and Marion the other Other famous liorses then in the Smith stable were Van Buren Ccverton Dolly McCone and thc flying Maid Marian Upon quitting Smith he raced a mixed stable of liorses successfully around Chicago the greater number of which belonged to himself The best of these were Aniiie Oldficld Federal Mayor Johnson Blue Mint and Medallo His next venture was with the first stable formed by Irving IL Wheatcroft now in Australia He trained suc ¬ cessfully for Wheatcroft until tlie close of the Jack ¬ sonville meeting of 100010 Air Marion is not only famous as a trainer of horses but he has earned a great reputation by the development of jockeys He made Charley Thorpe a great rider Fred Taral first rode under his instructions lie also developed the colored brothers Lon and Al Clayton His last protege was the Louisville boy Carl Ganz Mr Marion has come back to the turf this season with a band of twoyearolds which horsemen arc noting closely as they recognize the ability of their trainer Mr Marion says that Dan Ilonig his first employer is still alive in St Louis but has been in poor health since the partnership existing between him and his brother was dissolved many years ago H agoH C Hallenheck the owner of the Kentucky Derby favorite Worth is reported to have bought several promising twoyearolds from J E Madden The latter is disposing of all his thoroughbreds in training and will race no horses on the American tnrf in 1912 in accordance with the policy he has followed for several years The owner of Hamburg Place does not intend to cease breeding thorough ¬ breds but he is endeavoring to build up a market abroad for the product of his breeding stud He figures he can raise horses in Kentucky cheaper than he can in England and this is the reason he does not take bis stallions and mares abroad Mr Madden is quoted as saying that he will return to the running turf in this country with a stable when ¬ ever the sport is revived on the metropolitan tracks tracksFireman Fireman G M Odoms good Clark Handicap eli ¬ gible is looking well but his old knee ailment is still troubling him That is the reason thc son of Sir Dixon runs so well in the mud as when he gets warmed up on such a course his ailing knee does not affect him as it does when he is running on a hard fast track
