CLOPTON RULING TO STAND Notwithstanding the fact that news reached here yesterday to the effect that the stewards of the Jockey Club had sustained the stewards at Palmetto Park when they suspended W A Massey S A Clopton and jockey Willie Hopkins because of the big improvement in form shown by Jawbone when he was first home In the Palmetto Derby there was a persistent rumor affoat to the effect that S A Clopton had practically been restored to good stand ¬ ing and would be able to race again It was stated that the local stewards gave Clopton a hearing and after his side of the story was told as well as that of the blacksmith and many other persons they de ¬ cided that they were too hasty In announcing the suspension of the men and announced that they in ¬ tended to file a recommendation with the Jockey Club asking that the suspension against Clopton and the others be lifted as all were guiltless of any wrongdoing This rumor was brought to the atten ¬ tion of E C Smith the Jockey Clubs representa ¬ tive Mr Smith said that there was absolutely no foundation to the story He pointed to the fact that the Jockey Club had upheld the stewards In the ruling and all the people implicated still stand sus ¬ pended He further stated that as is well known the matter Is entirely out of the hands of the local body once they made their report to the main body and while they could give a bearing or obtain some new information on the trouble they could not take any more part In the matter It is now up to the Jockey Club Whether or not the three concerned will be restored to good standing Charleston News and Courier
