THE MANAGER WINS DERBY T C MCDOWELLS CRACK COLT TAKES FORT ERIES MOST IMPORTANT STAKE R J Mackenzies Buckhorn Is Second and J W Schorrs Froglegs Runs Third Kentucky Horses Do WsJl at Canadian Course Buffalo N T June 29 Tlwmas C McDowell furnished the winner of the Canadian Derby at Fort Krle this afternoon in his Voter colt The Manager The latter led from the rise of the barrier and in a driving finish beat Buckhorn threequarters of a length with Froglegs third beaten a nose for sec ¬ ond place The best horse won on his merits The race was run before the largest crowd that ever turned out at Fort Erie and over a track that was In iwrfect condition The Manager was heavily sup iwrted by the Kentucky contingent and always ruled favorite There were only four starters and the race was generally looked upon as a contest be ¬ tween Froglegs the champion of his age hi Canada and The Manager the pride of the Kentuckians Buckhorn and Fiamma the other starters had but few supporters T Kocrner was given the m6unt on The Manager and rode a perfect race Bntwell had the leg up on Froglegs while Borel was on Buckhorn FiammaThe and McTaggart on Fiamma The Manager rather disappointed his admirers by not being able to open as much of a lead as his stable connections looked for in the early part of the contest Froglegs hung to him with great per ¬ sistency in the first halt and this affected the chances of the Schorr colt The coltThe Manager held a lead of about a length and a half until rounding the far turn where Froglegs and Buckhorn hoth began closing iip the latter com ¬ ing from the rear with a good burst of speed Froglegs was within a neck of the leader as they swung Into the homestretch and a pretty struggl ensued The favorite went on with unshaken cour ¬ age and in the final drive successfully stood off the others othersBuckhorn Buckhorn got up in the closing stride to beat Frog legs a nose for second money Butwell complained after he dismounted of froglegs bearing over to the fence in the homestretch The colt is a rail runner and was disqualified in a couple of races last season for hearing to the inside Butwell had to quit riding attheJelghth post in an attempt to pull him off the fence The mile and a quarter was run in 204f which was within a fraction of a see ond of the Canadian record made by Jack Atkln two years ago The time by quarters was 24 48 liLifct 138 204 The successes of Granite John Furlong and Ca ¬ liph were profitable to many of the Keutuckians All were well supported by those who came from Latonia and as two of the three were at long odds U thousandsrlne meal tllat tuolr winnings ran into the thousands rlne AAIlson stable put over two winners in Beau coup and Caliph and for the first time during the present season in Canada victory of The Manager modestly although of course elated by his success It was rank misfortune that the colt is not a Derby winner before this said Mr McDowell I believe that he would have won the Kentucky Derbv had he been a starter In the Latonia Derby heSvas op ¬ posed to a superior colt in fit racing condition and I considered it quite an achievement for him to have landed in second place Since then The Manager has rounded into condition gradually and while he raced today to expectations he will show to better advantage in future starts as he had not fully recovered from his journey on the cars from Latonia LatoniaThe The victory of The Manager this afternoon gives his owner the distinction of Iwing the only man In America to have won the Kentucky Derby the Latonia Derby and the Fort Erie Derby He scored in the first named with AllanaDale and in the Latonia Derby with Woodlake Incidentally it may be mentioned that Miss Gussie winner of the first Fort McDowellA Erie Derby was
