PRINCE PALATINES DEFEAT AT NEWMARKET Sensationally Beaten by Lance Chest in Princess of Wales Stakes Statistics of English Racing London Eng July 8 At least one sensational occurrence featured the First Inly meeting at New ¬ market last week This was tli totally unexpected defeat of the Ascot Gold Cup winner Prince Iala tine l y Major Eustace Loders threeyearold geld ¬ ing Lance Chest Tills took place in the Princess of Wales Stakes at u mile and a half which netted the desirable sum of 10880 to the winner Prince Palatine carrying 144 K uiids and ridden by V Wooiton was an oddson favorite at 2 to 5 while Lance Chest with 10 up was one of the unquoted division against all of which the nominal price was 20 to 1 Halhlair was second choice at to 1 Prince Palatine looked fresh and well enough in tin paddock and no possible fault could lie found witli him as lie went down to the post Hut on the re ¬ turn journey lie failed to bring into play the fire which had marked his effort in the Ascot Cup and once Lance Chest joined him which lie did a fur ¬ long or so from the finish the race was over for Major Ixxlers colt simply walked away from hm So readily did lie win that the younger Grids was pulling him up at the winning post which Prince Palatine passed a somewhat tired horse No doubt Mr Pilkingtons colt was not quite himself whilst on the contrary Lance Chest which at Ascot had failed to get within a half length of Maiden Er legln ran possibly the best race of ills career i treat improvement by the way on his City and Suburban display and more in accordance witli his easy beating of Flanders ami others in the Hurst Park Yearling Plate The mile and a half was covered in 230 Indicating a really good race but not one in which such a high class horse as Prince Palatine should have been beaten One di ¬ vision of his admirers lays the defeat to a dislike of tile course pointing out that last year Mushroom gave Prince Palatine a signal beating by ten lengths over the same track There may be something in this theory hut in the meantime those who before this race insisted that Prince Palatine would de ¬ feat Stedfast in the Eclipse Stakes at Sundown Park have exiterienced a violent shock and a conse ¬ quent reversal of that opinion opinionTwoyearold Twoyearold racing was interesting A didate for lirst division honors appeared when Kock Flint won the July Stakes from Itoseworthy Mir amichi and seven others in smooth fashion This son of Itock Sand is a tine appearing colt and Mr K Heddinglon was distinctly in good luck when in ¬ spired to give 3300 for him at the sale of the Bel mont yearlings last year Craganour confirmed the good opinion formed of him at Ascot by taking up 132 pounds and winning the Kxeler Stakes in a canter from Mr Whitneys Cabaret which is him ¬ self a tine colt but could make no impression on the winner It is now the general impression that Yaganour is the lx st twoyearold that has appeared in our racing so far with the possible exception of Sliogun lie defeated the latter in the New Stakes at Ascot but Sliogun was giving him ton pounds carrying KM to his 124 Sliogun himself was also a First July winner taking up 131 pounds and win ¬ ning the FullKHirne Stakes with all ease from the somewhat unlucky Orby colt Diadumenos and five other aspirants one of which was Mr L Wiiiaas Americanbred Golden Cloud by Ogden Lucy Glit ¬ ters Other twoyearolds which raced witli dis Unction were Lord Koseberys Kanquliar which won the 1rinccss Plate from twentyseven opponents and L de Rothschilds Hock Sand lilly Surcingle which triumphed over twentynine of her age in the Plan ¬ tation Plate PlateKing King George won two races in the course of the meeting La Lac winning the Bottisham Plate on the opening day while Dorando was victor In the much more important Duke of Cambridgeshire Handicap at a mile on Wednesday defeating Mr P Nelkos Americanbred colt Outram by a halflength in a resolutely fought out finish to the accompaniment of tremendous cheering Tho king was present and viewed the success of his horse with unconcealed pleasure pleasureA A new candidate for the Eclipse Stakes appeared in Jennings team on Saturday in La Boheme II an Importation from France She is a bay filly of medium size and in a gallop on the race course side this morning she moved very well Her form however does not seem good enough to trouble such as Stedfast and Tagalic The latter had a gallop of a mile and a quarter with Mr Raphaels new purchase Marcolica and she is looking bigger and better than she has ever done before beforeJohn John Bull which attempted to win the Derby for Horatio Bottomley in 1007 has fallen on evil days and is now engaged in carrying Eastbourne visitors from the station cab rank to their hotels John which won several races as a twoyear old hag taken kindly to harness and is shortly to be transferred to a newly decorated turnout turnoutIt It is stated that August Helmont lias given M Halbronn head of the French syndicate an option on the stallion Itock Sand for breeding in the In ¬ terest of French and American sportsmen for at least 40000 yearly for two years One reason for permitting Hock Sand to go to France is that any of his progeny will be eligible for all French races whereas those sired by him in America or England are eligible only for a few French events eventsThe The Scandinavian Derby which was run at Klnin penborg near Copenhagen on Sunday June 2 at tracted a Held of six and was easily won by the favorite llerr C Morescos Marquette by Saint Martin Masquerade The same owners colors were successful in the race a year ago by aid of Lille Clans Roth those winners were trained by Percy Wangh a son of the exGradilz trainer Richard Waugh who was also responsible for Klampenborg winner of the IHO Derby Percy Waugh has thus achieved iho unique distinction of training three Derby winners in succession successionThe The death is announced of Frelherr Albert von Oppenheirn who passed away at Hamburg on Mon ¬ day last at the ago of seventyeight years He wag a younger brother of Freilierr Eduard von Oppen Iieim the wellknown German breeder and owner of race horses horsesThe The German Derby winner Gulliver II has broken the record for that country in the matter of winnings in one season previously held by Faust which In 1008 won 54075 Gullivers winnings this year amount to 50005 50005Miss Miss Malaprop 3 by Meddler out of Correction the property of C Carroll has left S Darlings place at Beckhampton for Folkestone en route for France where she will in future be trained trainedA A Sou tli African exchange says that J Ilerff is in hopes of breeding a grey to take classic honors in that country as Tagalle has done In England Ilis grey broodmare Banzai is bred on somewhat similar lines to the dam of the English Derby win ner she being by St Frusquin out of Tophane by Le Sancy R SancyR Crokers threeyearold Farrier by Fariman out of St lima has been sont from Gleucairn County Dublin to George Edwardes place at Og bourne where he will be trained by P Hartigan HartiganCylgad Cylgad has terminated his racing career and it is intended to put him to a few approved mares at a fee of ninetyeight guineas guineasIt It Is now a close thing between Mr W Raphael and Lord Derby In competition for leadership among the winning owners of the present year but the former Is still lirst by a narrow margin However Lord Derbys greater stable resources will probably lead to his supplanting the luckv owner of Tagalie in the premiership before long The brothers Joel are next in stable earnings with the unusual fea ture that for once Solly is ahead of J IS In comparison with the last two years the latter has been decidely unlucky so far this year Three American owners II 15 Duryea II p Whitney and A liclmunt are now in the list of winners of 10000 or more which at present is isWinning Winning Races Amount Owner Horses Won Won W
