MANASSEH WINS SALT LAKE DERBY Vanir Penalized to 125 Pounds a Creditable Second Tivo Lagoon Track Records Reduced Salt Lake City Utah July 27 The summer meet ¬ ing of the Lagoon Fair and Racing Association came Jo a close today with the Inaugural running of tho Salt Lake Derby value 2000 as a fitting climax The Derby was won by C E Rogers Mauasseb which tilly was one of the light weights of the race Vanir whose Derby victory at Coeur dAIene hart earned him a penalty carried the top weight of 125 pounds and ran a highly creditable race in finish ¬ ing second He was beaten only a neck Vanir ran tcoupled with Ymlr as the F J Grefer entry entryTho Tho crowd In attendance was by far the largest rf the meeting and wagered freely on the Derby Mauasseh made ajl the pace and gamely stood off Vauirs closing bid By running the mile and an eighth in 153 Munasseh reduced the track record for that distance materially materiallyJenny Jenny Geddes well supported left the post In an awkward manner and did not cut much figure in the running finishing beaten off offII II G Bcdwells Lochiel in winning the fifth race reduced the track record for one mile to 138 He ran an excellent race perfectly handled by Coburn Meadow tho favorite received a poorly judged ride by Gross who allowed the mare to fall too far out of contention Governor Spry was in attendance te witness the running of the Derby DerbySecretary Secretary Nathanson received a request by wire from W B Carson at Vancouver for the reserva ¬ tion of fifteen stalls at Butte for his stable stableA A tenear Pullman special with two diners at ¬ tached will depart tonight for Butte with the fol ¬ lowers of racing who have been here
