SWEEPER II UNLUCKY AT NEWMARKET On the first day of the Newmarket Second Juy meeting King Georges threeyearold colt Le Lac defeated the Two Thousand Guineas winner Sweep ¬ er II by a head in a grand racu for the Dulling ham Plate at a mile and a half Sweeper II carry ¬ ing 134 pounds to lia on Le Lac while the third horse Tidal Wave had 125 up Of this race aud King Georges success on the turf this year Sport ¬ ing Life of the next day said We arc becoming accustomed to cheer a Royal horse home at Newmarket this season From the Craven Meeting the Kings horses have steadily im ¬ proved and not a fixture has passed yet without the Royal colors being successfully carried At the Craven Meeting Piutadeau and Thrace both earned brackets at the First Spring Pintadeau dead heated with Tidal Wave at the Second Spring Pintadeau was again to the fore aud at the First July Meeting a fortnight igo both Doraudo and Le Lac added to the record Yesterday it was again the turn of the latter who placed the valu ¬ able Dullingbam Plate to the credit of his Majesty MajestyWhat What the field lacked in quantity it made up in quality Lyoaon and Greenback were the most prominent absentees but Sweeper II took his chance though the distance was supposed to be a bit too far for him and he was allowed to start at 5 to 1 favoritism resting with Tidal Wave which was served up a very strong favorite while the Kings colt which was also trusted to stay had plenty of supporters Higgs supportersHiggs made the best use of England which was followed by Sweeper II Ulster King and Le Lac while Todal AAave was last England led three lengths into the straight from Sweeper II and Le Lac Ulster King dropping back while coining down the hill Tidal Wave improved his position Approaching Plantation Corner Ulster King gave Way and Le Lac took second place to Sweeper II while Tidal Wave was at their heels in the Dip ONeill rode a patient race on Sweeper II which looked like holding the Kings colt on whom Foy was making a strong challenge but 120 yards from home Sweeper II weakened while tho favorite which had been pulled out from tho rails was utilizing his big stride and bearing down on the pair pairIt It was a most interesting finish and gamely struggling out a comparative stern chase Le Lac followed up his previous success here hi sterling style while Tidal Wave only missed second place by a neck Sweeper II was trying to give twenty one pounds to the kings colt and so was not dis ¬ graced and we may put Tidal AVavo as unlucky s he was coming up fast fastSweeper Sweeper II probably ran a better horse than ho has ever done and Foy greatly distinguished him ¬ self on the kings horse He had to drive his mount very hard for a furlong and at the finish Jiad to make a supreme effort to get the better of Sweeper II which ran on with great courage nnd determination Tidal AVave had none the best of luck for at tho distance ho had to come round several horses in order to get a clear run Alto ¬ gether it was a very stirring spectacle
