ST LEGER WON BY AN AMERICAN COLT Tracery an Easy First hy Five Lengths While the Favorite Lomond Runs Unplaced London September 11 At Doucaster this after ¬ noon the St Leger Stakes of 0500 sovereigns for threeyearolds at 50 sovereigns over the St Leger course of one mile six furlongs and 132 yards was won by August Belmonts brown colt Tracery by Kock Sand Topiary Sol Joels brown folt Maiden Erlegh by Polymelus Plum Tart linishing second and J L Dngdales bay or brown coll Hector by St Amant Hecuba third Fourteen horses started Tracery was an easy winner by live lengths and was ridden by the French jockey Bellhonse Lo ¬ mond was an even money favorite but was beaten after racing in close company with Tracery to the straight It was S to 1 against Tracery in the betting bettingTracery Tracery did not race as a twoyearold His tirst start was in the Kpsom Herby of this year in which he finished third to Tagalie and Jaeger Tracery was not then at his best and obviously was capable of vast improvement His next start was in the St James Palace Stakes at Ascot This valuable event he won by four lengths with another Americanbred colt Sweeper II next to him and Santa Bellis third He carried 119 pounds to 120 on Sweeper II At Goodwood he won the Sussex Stakes and again defeated Sweeper II Jaeger finishing third Thus his racing career previous to his brilliant triumph in the St Leger was con lined to throe races of which lie won two Witli the Two Thousand Guineas won by Sweeper II and the St Leger by Tracery it must IMJ said that American horses have won their full share of Eng ¬ lands classics of this year Tracery is the sec ¬ ond American winner of the big Doncaster race Iroquois having won it in 1SS1
