HEADS APART IN HANDICAP FOUR HORSES FIGURE IN EXCITING FINISH IN DOUGLAS PARK RACE Duval Gains Victory by Narrow Margin Over Tunny Geddcs and Brig Favorites Account Accountfor for Half the Card Louisville Ky September 17 Keen sport marked by close finishes was again the rule at Douglas Park this afternoon The attendance was materially decreased as compared with the big crowd of yesterday but the betting showed only a slight falling off from the total of yesterday Most of th races had many likely contenders and speculation was generally uniform Three outstanding first choices were beaten including Benanet and BIT from the E H Bradley stable Sea Cliff was to ¬ other beaten ferorlte The successful favorites were Howdy Howdy Htivncn and Sleeth The Cincin nati turfman J B Hespess scored a double during the afternoon with Volthorpe and Huvoco HuvocoA A handicap at one mile and seventy yards fea ¬ tured the program and resulted in a rousing con ¬ test that terminated in victory for Duval over Jenny Geddes with Brig in third place The extreme out ¬ sider Coy Lad was a factor in the early running and contributed extensively to the favorites defeat as lOstep kept her in close promixity to the pace ¬ maker and the exhaustive effort left her with lit th ¬ in reserve to stand off the challenge of Duval and Jenny Geddes In the short stretch drive Jenny Geddes effort was a sparkling one and had the ran been a trifle longer she would have landed the purse purseAnother Another thrilling contest developed in the fifth race won by Sleeth lie was decidedly best but received poor handling Yniir a recent arriral from the far west came near to beating him There was considerable betting activity in this race about Pud but after flattering his backers for six furlongs ho tired badly and finished in last place placeThe The juvenile race for fillies that came second on the card was a thriller until the last seventy yards where Cream one of the outsiders obtained a slight lead and passed the finish in advance of Gowell and Henanet The six starters left the barrier in perfeot alignment and continued in this fashion until on the stretch turn At no time was there a twolengths margin separating the first and last horses horsesThe The much improved Howdy Howdy scored In easy fashion though his bnckers were given some con ¬ cern during the first part when Husky Lad had i five lengths lead Husky Lad was done for after going threequarters and finished far back backThe The Hespess successes began in the opener when Huvoco a firsttime starter in Kentucky took tho purse with Prince Ilcnnis in second place and GoM Color grouped in the field betting third The big band that started In this race caused considerable interference Prince Hermis was a sufferer from it but it is unlikely that he could have beaten the win ner with clear sailing Volthorpes rictory was also achieved in easy fashion Ella Brysou being his chief opponent at the finish with Morristowu outstaying Sea Cliff for third place placeBarney Barney Dreyfus owner of the Pittsburg National League hall club was among todays visitors and took a keen interest in the sport He was accom ¬ panied by Col Alex Labold Mr Dreyfus has been disassociated witli the turf since the retirement of Chulita in which lie was jointly interested with Mr Labold LaboldCharles Charles II Ilughfs the wellknown trainer and formerly agent for II C Hallenheck was ah arriral todaV from Havre de Grace lie reports that Adams Express is being pointed by trainer Taylor for th fourmile Kentucky Endurance Stakes to be run at support for Luther which started in the opening dash on the strength of i recent fust preliminaiT trial Luther is a brother to High Priv ¬ ate and raced fairly well in his effort today todayWork Work on the extensive improvements at Churchil Downs is rapidly nearing conclusion and when com ¬ pleted the plant will be the finest this side of New York Col Matt J Winn is giving the construction his personal attention and is aiming to ultimately have the handsomest course In the country It would be a difficult matter to find two racing plants in the countrv to equal Douglas Park and Churchill Downs General Manager Matt J Wimi will shortly announce the list of stakes to be run during the 100 days of winter racing at Juarex JuarexMost Most of the horses in the Francis J Pons stabo are on the ailing last but coining around Mr Pons has again put Great Heavens in training The latter served a number of wellbred mares during his retirement at the Pons farm in Tennessee TennesseeThe The turf correspondents hero are still a discon ¬ solate lot due to inability to secure proper tele graphic service from the track The racing com ¬ mission enacted a rule recently permitting tli restoration of the wires within the track enclosure but imposed conditions on the telegraph company that they would not comply with because they held them to be at variance with the Interstate Com ¬ merce Commissions rules At present a branch office located in a tent outside the track gate is doing service for a filing station for the press dis ¬ patches hut in case of rain for any length of timu it is likely that it will be put out of commission It is presumed that the wire trouble will be ad ¬ justed at the next meeting of the Kentucky Stats Hacing Commission CommissionAfter After the races
