SOLDIERS PREVENT RACING TWO COMPANIES OF INDIANA MILITIA TAKE CHARGE OF MINERAL SPRINGS TRACK Uouldte Patrons of Sport Denied Admission to En ¬ closure and Days Program Is Abandoned Appeal to Be Made to Courts Today No racing occurred over the track of tUo Mineral Springs Jockey Club yesterday The reason or rea ¬ sons were clad in klmki uniforms and bore rifles with Sic l bayouets Company F of tlie Third Indiana National Guard regiment from South Bend arrive shortly after 12 oclock and took possession of the track They were under command of Major Kreyeruiuth and In their course at the track acted under his orders Another company ordered 1roiu Kfiisselner Indiana was under orders to reach the track at the sam time hut did not arrive until about p in at which time the proceedings of the day were over and the track practically de ¬ serted sertedTho Tho proceedings were brief The soldiers took possession of all exits and entrances to the grand ¬ stand and its immediate adjuncts and surroundings and refused admission to all except a few newspaper men and track officials The crowds which went to the track from Chicago marched down the walks leading Jo the track ticket gates until informed that the soldiers were in possession and racing was oil for the day Then they at once marched buck in their trains and were speedily on their way home To test the disposition of the military in charge as to the racing alone an attempted race was arranged for and at the appointed time for the regular first race jockeys G V Carroll Wood Mus gravtt and Mondon astride of Danger Mark New Hlver Ernest H and Duchess Daffy emerged from th saddling paddock and trotted toward the judges stand for the customary parade But a tile of soldiers stretched across the track and halted the boys abruptly Then starter Dick Dwycr ordered the riders back to the paddock and a racing episode wi I hont precedent was at an end There was no dis ¬ order no threats or no apparent ill humor any ¬ where The soldiers had their orders and executed thtm quietly Init firmly afler the way of foldiers Tim prevailing eentiniout of the scanty crowd seemed bo exprcssed by one person who said How iaJi such things be In a lime of peace with the ourts open Between ono and two oclock tha following notice was posted on the bulletin board on the back of the judges stand standJust Just ns soon as executive anarchy is suppressed legal racing will proceed A F Knotts KnottsPresident President Knotts said that a conference to deter ¬ mine upon a course of procedure would bo held last night and with that point settled application to the courts for relief would be made at once He said that if the removal of the troops could be s ecinvd today in time the races would be run as usual If not they would be resumed just as soon as the removal of the military obstruction could be brought about Sheriff Wood of Porter County anpeared at the track and was at first denied admittance but was finally allowed to come in Ho asked Major Freycr inuth if martial law iiad been proclaimed and was iuforjncd in reply that it had not The sheriff was displeased win the course of events and is re ¬ ported tu have said Its au uncalled for pro ¬ ceeding and reflection on me But I cant buck an army All parties undoubtedly will be in court in a short time The racing association has redress If troops come they should be under my command If Governor Marshall could bo reached I would wire him The soldiers have their orders from the sec ¬ retary to the governor who seems to have over ¬ looked a few legal points pointsSome Some of tho owners were talking about bringing joint action for damages in the United States Dist ¬ rict or Circuit Courts But exactly who or what to sue and for what measure of damages seemed in a nebulous condition of indeteruiiuatiou indeteruiiuatiouIt It was reported the militia are to camp at the track until ordered away by competent authority authorityEntries Entries for today were closed as usual and will continue to be made up daily until racing at the track is resumed or definitely abandoned for this vrar
