FEATURES OF RECENT RACING IN ENGLAND London Eug October 12 At Kem ton Park to ¬ day a gentleman whose success in our racing has corresx mled poorly with his lavish scale ofexpendi tun for horses ami nominations experienced a touch of Fortunes favor as weleome as it was unex ¬ pected The gentleman iu question was Louis WInans whose big Americanbred fouryearold Adam Bede at a long price in the betting won the valuable Duke of York Stakes at a mile and a qmr ter trom Mr Belmonts Monotone ud ten more competitors of which the unplaced Lady Eileen was the favorite at J to 4 Adam Bede going to the post at 100 to 9 It was a truly run race and then were not the usual excuses after the Xveut of interference or bad luck at the bend Up to this point Dalys had set a capital pace aud held a good lead but once in the line for home he shut up with startling suddenness Adam Bede always favorably placet hud already taken second position and he was then left iu front He is as a rule a dlUicult horso to ride but Foy hud perfect control of him aud strid ¬ ing along lie was a very handy winner indeed First llamerton and then the bottom weight Mono ¬ tone threatened danger but the Manton horse cither crossed Ids legs or was cannoned into and Pi er was for a stride or two compelled to sit up This may have cost him the race though the winuer appeared to finish with just a triile in hand The success Louis Winans colors was exceedingly popular for he has not so many winners MS he deserves since be ¬ coming a patron of the Lordship establishment establishmentIt It was Adam Bedes first important victory since he was brought to Kngland in the spring of last year to go through a hurried preparation for the Derby He is a powerful massive chestnut colt of Stockwell type by Adam Grace Humberts and he may be only just coming to his true form In America hi only ran once as i twoyearold and therefore he has not had the vitality taken out uf him as so often happens to auiuiais which have been trained in that country In this respect lie has the advantage of his former stable companion and relative Bashti which was certainly the most bril ¬ liant twoyearold filly in the State but was more of less of a wreck when Joyner received her in Kng ¬ land She has shown him speed at home but seems sadly nervous on a race course1 She like Adam Bede is by Adam AdamThe The day previous to the running ofr this race was marked by the unexpected success of J B Joels colt Uadiant In the Imperial Produce Plate for two yearolds worth 12020 tt the winner and one of Englands three most valuable races for horses of that age Lord Uoscberys Saiiquhar was supposed to have the race ut his mercy and was accordingly an oddson favorite but did not respond gamely when called on by Maher and could only finish sec ¬ ond Uadiant is a brother1 to the Derby winner Sun star and is a symmetrical colt but of the small order The Imperial Produce Plate is noteworthy for the successes of horses descended from tlie famous niare Paraffin Cbclandry 1805 Flotsam 1002 Flair 1905 Lesbia 1007 Vivid 1908 Neil Gow 1903 and Prince Palatine 1910 all coming within tills category ft was Paraffin which laid the foundations of Lord Koscburys racing fo tunes She was a halfsister to the triple crown hero Lord Lyou aud to the St Lcger winner Achievement and from her alliance with Uoslcrucian came Hluniinata the dam of Lord Rosebcrys first Derby winner Ladns and of the afArementioneJ Chclandry as well as grauddatu of Neil Gow Para ffin was also the dam of Footlight which Lord Ilose bery sold to the late Sir Daniel Cooper and from which are descended Flotsam Prince Palatine and the three sisters Lesbia FlaJr and Vivid VividTagalie Tagalie left Newmarket Monday for Mr Raphaels stud farm A threeyearold filly by Cyllene from Tagale she won one race as a juvenile the Bosca wen Stakes at Newmarket Her first outing this season was in the One Thousand Guineas which she won from Alope and Bclleisle ran second to Cylgad for the Newmarket Stakes but created a surprise t Epsom by winning tlie Derby being followed honu bv Jaeger and Tracery the lastnamed subsequently scoring in the St Lcger at Doncaster Tagalie dis ¬ appointed in the Oaks and had two other outings without troubling the judge She was struck out of all engagements Monday MondayBaron Baron G Springer lias now won this season in AustriaHungary the record sum of 113055 or over SllOOO more than the amount credited to the late E vou Blaskovits when he headed the list of win ¬ ning owners in lilOH Recently Baron Springers colors were successfully carried by Jaromir son of Gonvernant in the Esterhazy Memorial and by Adular in the Falb Handicap Jaromir which was ridden by Ferguson contributed uo less than 12915 to the total by defeating the Graditz Stud repre ¬ sentative Laudou by a head after a great finish finishFull Full of interest this 3 ear is tlie Middle Park Plate which will be run at Newmarket on Friday of next week with Cragunonr Shogun and Kock Flint deemed as sure starters It is a race for two yearolds that despite the institution of stakes of much greater value remains one of the truest touchstones of juvenile merit and which will prob ¬ ably on Friday next decide the moot point as to the youngster entitled to tlie highest place among his contemporaries The class as Is usually the case will be good and the contest for many sportsmen will supply the most exhilarting thing of the week weekLady Lady James Douglas has just privately purchased from Mr Fairie tho Oaks winner Rosedrop which is certainly in foal to Bayardo She has also bought Irprcss by Cylleiio out of Agave the dum of Gale ottia which won the One Thousand Guineas Cy ¬ press is believed to be safe in foal to have been definitely determined In favor of the first named by the triumph of Prince Palatine over Sted fast in the Jockey Club Stakes leaving the other three still closely grouped in the as yet unsettled contest for second third and fourth places Ot these Mr Hultou probably possesses the best chance of ultimately finishing second because of the number of excellent and still well engaged twoyearolds iu his stable Tagalie having Iteen retired W Raphael is likely to remain in his present position with a possibility of being passed by J B Joel Three American owners ilessrs A Kclmout H P Cyllone lias lost the leadership The victory of Prince Palatine In Newmarkets Jockey Club Stakes 1ms placed the defunct Persimmon right at the head of affairs with an advantage of upwards of 10OOO over his nearest attendant It is rather too much perhaps to expect Persimmon to maintain his posi ¬ tion until the end of Noveml er but the old Derby hero possesses a wonderful record considering that his winning representatives stop short at three The advance of Persimmon is of course the out ¬ standing feature of todays list of results and as can be gathered from the pedigrees appended the names of St Simon and also of Gallinule are wonderfully prominent among tlie winning stock The stallions represented by progeny xvith collective winnings of 25000 or more are now the following followingSire
