REGARDING CHARLESTON RACING Cincinnati O October 28 Francis J Pons gen ¬ eral manager of the Charleston FiIr and RacVjg Association arrived today at Latonia from New York and confirmed the report that the Charleston track will be operated the coining winter Regard ¬ ing the contemplated meeting Mr Ions said We will begin on Saturday January 25 and race sixty one days There need not be the slightest feur on the part of the horsemen that there will be any in ¬ terference with the sport sportWe We are going to try through legislative means to secure 11 modification of the recently enacted laws against bookmaking but failing In this there need not lie any fear entertained that the racing will suffer Cliarlestoniazis that is the majority of tit eifinens of Charleston and this Includes some of the most representative ones want the racing and will lend their cordial support to the snctess of th meeting Charleston differs In many respects from other cities and its people resent outside iuterfer once with its affairs There are ninny prohibitory laws iu South Carolina that the Clmrlestonians iliffir with and do not observe because they think the measures should not apply to them 1 This by no means signifies that Charlestonlans are hnhttiial law breakers They are as law abiding as anywhere but they want racing and will there ¬ fore welcome the horsemen and I can positively assure owners trainers jockeys and others that there will not be any interference with our plans We will again race under the Jockey Club sanction and conform to their rules I have assurances from many of the best horsemen in the country that they will be represented at our track and I look for a highclass and successful session Our otlicials will bo the brst that can be obtained Twenty stakes ranging in value from flJOO to 82500 are now being compiled and entry blanks for these events will lie distributed among the horseiccn iu aliout a week weekMr Mr Ions will remain here for a week before re ¬ turning to Charleston to begin active preparations for the racing
