AMERICANS WELCOMED IN FRANCE FRANCEI I can vouch for one thing said M Chori Hal bronn the wellknown French auctioneer in a re ¬ cent interview and that is that we In France admire and respect American sportsmen and this recent decision of the Stud Book Commission is cer ¬ tainly not the outcome of envy or jealousy as a sec ¬ tion of the racing public may lie inclined to think Kngland some years ago began to discriminate against American trainers and iockeys with the re suit that only Joyner Mr H P Whitneys trainer and Skeots Martin and Danny Jlaher the jockevs are left there thereOn On the other hand France has welcomed Amer ¬ ican owners trainers and jockeys with open arms and will continue to do so Men like Mr W K Vanderbilt Mr H B Dnryea Mr Charles Carroll Mr II P Whitney Mr T Hitchcock and others will always IK welcome here and good sportsmen as they are they will be the first to appreciate the value of the recent decision No doubt many Amer ¬ icanbred horses whose names are found in th French Stud Book should not be there under the new rule but I do not see very well how they can be eliminated now nowWhen When the American Invasion began the French authorities did not raise any serious objections nor did they consider it necessary to examine too closely the pedigrees of the horses brought over At that time the American Stud Book authorities were thought to be reliable but unfortunately It has since been discovered to be otherwise otherwiseAmerican American breeders like Messrs II P Whitnev the late J B Keene August Belmont F C Bishop and Clarence JIackay realizing that many errors had been committed in America regarding the Amer ¬ ican Stud Book entries especially since the Civil War of 1SOO wlmu all thoroughbred horses were dis ¬ persed over the country and many records destroyed went to Kngland and France to buy stallions and broodmares The recent avalanche of American horses in Kurope lias necessitated greater pains be ¬ ing taken on the part of those responsible for France must protect her Interests In a matter of such vital importance
