DEATH OF THE SIRE OF ROCK SAND Last week I remarked on rue absence of the name of Sainfoin from the list of stallions whose fcos for this year have been registered with Messrs Weatherby and suggested that as he was foaled as long ago as 1SS7 it would be interesting to know if lie was still in the land of the living It WMS well known of course that the sire of Rock Stind bad been in Ireland for the last six years but at times well known stallions are dead and burled without Iteat of drum by the press Minting for example departed for the happy hunt ¬ ing grounds in the Hummer of 1000 and it was not until ninny months afterwards that an observant scrilK chanced to come across the record of his death in the last volume of the Stud Book and promptly sent round an obituary notice to the paiwrs making a scoop in a small way In similar fash ¬ ion Sainfoin 1ms passed away without the fact of his dentil lielng given publicity for my note of last week has bixMight me a letter from Mr W II Twamley of Rithto de Bullitore County Kildare kindly informing me that Sainfoin died some time since nt M i rs Sliiwcocks of Curlow and adding Unit he is succeeded there by the Desmond horse Maclmkos Poor old Sainfoin In him vanishes the best of tlwe sons of Springfield and hero of what most mosti i pU in the spring of 1SIO thought would bo known as Surefoots Derby especially after the slashing I my son of Wisdom had cantered off with the Two Thousand Guineas Sainfoin in his earlier days at Kingsclere was not seriously regarded as t Derby horse for the reason that his stable com ¬ panion the late Mr Willie Lows Rightaway was from seven to ten jmunds bis suiKrior It was not until Rightaway seriously injured his foot through trending on a stone at exorcise that the second string came into the limeliiiht and as the race for the Blue Riblioii proved Kingsclere was that year in the fortunate position of having two colts good enough to win It Riglitaway like Swefoot a son of Wisdom i bail enntercd oiT with a race at Liver ¬ pool prior to meeting with tin mishap referred to and lu pulled round in time to run for the Legor but misfortune dogged his footsteps and be split a pMStpru during that race wlileli fell to the Duke of Portland by aid of Memoir Sainfoin was bred at Queen Victorias stud at Hampton Court and wus bought uf Mo jtuuuwl sultf as 1 yi rliug br Mr John Porter for 530 guineas I think the lato Sir R Jardine had a half share in him and at his only appearance as a juvenile ho won the Astley Stakes at Lewes The next season lie carried off the Esher Stakes at Sandown and the Dee Stakes at Chester and was afterwards sold to Sir James Miller for 7r 00 sovereigns and a contingency of half the Derby stakes After his victory in the Epsom classic be ran several times without suc ¬ cess retiring to the stud in 1S 2 Rock Sand was a long way the most successful of his get but Cin quefoil Marconi lianana and others were good winners After Sir J Millers deatli Lord Carnar ¬ von bought Sainfoin for 700 guineas This was in 1 0 and for the next few years he stood at the Ciogliraii Stud near Dublin before being trans ¬ ferred to the Messrs Slowcocks stud at Carlow Last year there was only one foal by him and only one in 1011 but before that he had a fair number His only winners last season were Merry Lassie which brought off a 100 to 0 chance at Hurst Park when known as the Barnassie filly and Fair Offender which scored at the Curragh Vigilant in Lon ¬ don Snortsman
