EXPERT TREATMENT OF DAVIES STABLE STABLEFrancis Francis Nelson writes of the Thorn cliffe stable in the Toronto Globe as follows The horses belonging to Kobert Duvies and meant to iMrry the canary and black stripes this yesir were doing well at the old Kenning track at Wash ¬ ington when seen by Tin GM o man a few dnys ago wild their glistening coats testified to the caretaking abilities of trainer John Nixon who has had seven ¬ teen head to look after all winter An organization that represents an earning capacity of over twenty tlHiitijiind dollars In a year deserves tho best attention and direction tlmt can be had and it was gratifying to everyone who takes any interest in the prosress of tho turf to see tho realization of this fact when a change of control resulted from the retirement of Charles Patterson who was the tniiner last year II is net at all uncommon even with men of great success in other enterprises to see men who hnv mnde a great success of other activities fall to ex ¬ ercise ordinary business acumen in the management of their racing affairs even to turning over to un ¬ tried or incompetent persons the control and hhtir dling of property of great actual or prosnegtiVf vjjjug in the horse line Kxccpt in cases of abnormal go id luck the result must IPO failure and the loss of in ¬ terest by the owner Canada bus too few owners now and cannot afford to low any by such a process which is also discouraging to tho profession of train ¬ ing by putting men of experience and ability In a dltlicull business oi equal footing with tlmso who have still to learn their trade and often do so at tho expense of their employer employerThe The Inxrses that carried Mr liavies colors last year won thirtyseven races were twentysix times second and fortytwo times third earning in all 20 i So when ho had to provide a new trainer for them this year lie got himself a good man Trainers arc not exactly rarities and there are others as good as John Nixon but the point is that Mr Davies lino of action works for the nrosimrlty of the turf Owners should be competing for tho services of tin best They are always the cheapest even if not to be had for the least money moneyIt It was the Intention to run some of the horses at the Havre de Grace meeting and return to Toronto May 1 As no suitable stall accommodation could be bad at that track the return to Woodbine will bo made as soon as the weather looks settled and tho express company can attend to the job Washington ij a good training track in winter when no fast work is wanted but it is too detp and slow to be a good place to sharpen them up Consequently the Thorn cliffo horses will be home in a few days and thsir first racing will bo at Woodbine where their owner is most anxious to win They aro as winning the Connaught Cups delivered the goods promptly botli at Woodbine and Blue Bonnets He was tar and away tho best horse owned In Canada and that was what his owner was aiming at His contribu ¬ tion to the total was S2SO which was more than he cost while the trophies were in addition The black champion won eight races was live times second and four times third He was a horse of moods and could have won probably half a dozen of the races ho lost if he could have been per ¬ suaded to run on those occasions This spring ho has shown no notions at all but takes his work with the others and never gives any trouble bo cause of the absence of tho pony without which he would ido nothing last year Tho stables mascots this year are a pigeon and a crow Plato Glass carries much more Ilesh than last yean and is in tho highest of spirits It is possible that with the tightening up of the training period ho may lose weight and temper but at present his condition and his disposition are all that could be asked from so good a horse A champion may be entitled to some indulgences Plate Glass is now a seven yearold His racing this year willbe mostly at distances of a milo and less Knights lessKnights Differ Calgary Liberty Hall Spring Maid and Moving Picture aro all going well and the threeyearold division is something to bo proud of Tiie firstnamed is a fouryearold now and with Flower Girl and the black horse is all the lot includes over throj years old Knights Differ and Calgary had been sick early In tho year but nro now quite recovered and for some time have been doing the same work as the others Liberty Hall on the retired list much of last summer will race again this year though ho will bo given is much time as possible He is full of willingness to run in the mornings just now First Sight is another that will come back lit to win many races racesThe The stable will bo strong again in the younger division this season Additions made last fitll from the choicest Kentucky yearlings promise to main tain the hiuli quality shown in 1012 and the trials of the yearlings at x lbipe hist fall were of llin kind that made spectators who wero experienced timers dubious of the accuracy of their watches tin til corroliorated bv their nelghliors Ifecoll tluj Ogilen Hammerless lilly for instance showed a quarter of a mile in 22f That is not nnparai leled but it Is so rare an exhibition that caution observers thought they might have made a mistake until a comparison of watches showed unanimity Kiglit on top of her in 23 was Southern Maid wlioso dam is the halfsister to King James Sky Kockefs time was 21f and the quarter by Hearts Dolijrlit was in 24 This fellow Is a brother to Moving Pic ¬ ture and that is why he was bought which sug ¬ gests that the filly is well thought of herself The possession of speed was demonstrated by the others at a shorter distance Amusement by Ouden Unterock went a furlong In 11 and it was most unfortunate that this fellow met with an ac ¬ cident shortly afterwards and had to lio sent to ThornelilTe for the winter instead of going south continue training Perpetual did his eighth in 11 and The Usher was a fifth of a second slower Volunteer was not tried triedTrainer Trainer C T Patterson was in charge of thei horses at that time and subsequently gave it is his opinion that from what they had shown liiii Amazement Ienietual and Kecoil would develop into stake winners of high class The Usher might lie slower in reaching tin top of his form but would be useful then All round they showed such ability to run fast that he had no doubt the stable would be qutto able to hold its own as last season Sinco last fall it is plain that Southern Maid can bo added to the list of those from which something out of the ordimirv may lie expected expectedIn In the matter of riding talent the stable will bo well served with Bob Small and the lightweight Moody the latter of whom has been galloping wifh the stable all winter Small has worked under trainer Nixon before as it was ho who rode Heresy to victory in the Kings Ilate of last year when John looked after the Dvment stable Small camo 1 o from Texas last spring with the J W Fuller ses During the season he rode fiftynine win ners in 451 races Moody learned his trade wjth K C Kvans and last year rode fifteen winners in
