threeyearolds and up ¬ ward one mile and a quarter to which the Douglas Park Jockey Club has added 10000 This is a greater amount of money than was ever before added to a stake in the history of Kentucky racing and it will result in making this event the richest race run on the American turf In 1913 unless one of the associations adds a greater amount to the fourmile Kentucky Endurance Stakes next fall The Kentucky Handicap will be richer than any Derby run this season and no twoyearold stake will approach it in value not even excepting the Breeders Futurity at Lexington or the Cincinnati Trophy at Laloma LalomaAside Aside from the richness of this event it will bring together as early in Jlhe season as May 20 practically every goid horse now in training three year olds and upward The reputation aro eligible for this stake and the older stars like The Manager Froglegs Biiekborn High Private and Star Charter are also listed among the entries It will be a race in which none of tin starters can have an excuse as being short in condi ¬ tion as the racing at Lexington and Churchill Downs will give probable starters the chance to get thoroughly lit before carrying colors in the Ken tuckv Iliiiulirav The distance a mile and a quar ¬ ter calls for the best that Is in a horse It is the same route of ground as the Brooklyn and Subur ¬ ban Handicaps were run over in the old days and the records of those tvo races show that it always took good horsiS to win such prizes The meeting at Douglas Park this spring will have all the attractions oC the verj lnst In turX sport It Is the first spring meeting held 111 recent years at this beautiful racing plant and the efforts of Manager Haehmeister and his associntrStin lif management of this race track will surely b fiiny appreciated by the turf followers not only of this city hut of all Kentucky in their liberality in hanging up stakes and purses which will draw from the great stables all the best horses now on the turf turfFollowing Following the spring meeting tit Churchill Downs with its historic Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks races the local season will be at Its height when Douglas Park begins its meeting The racing at Churchill Downs which is sure to he brilliant this spring will whet the appetite of lovers of the sport for just such racing as Douglas Park will provide provideLouisville Louisville is just now conceded to be the hub of racing iu all America It has supplanted all other points as the seat of highclass turf snort since New York was compelled by adverse legislation to close Belmont Park Sheepshead Bay Kmpire City and the other great metropolitan racing plants These tracks excepting Shcepshead Bay will resume this season but the restrictions under which they are placed does not permit them to iiang up the money now offered for racing at Churchill Downs Douglas Park and Latonia in this state These three courses now stand preeminent on the racing map and the eyes of the turf world are all turned towards Louis ¬ ville this spring springHis His Majesty J W Mcsservys Kentucky Derby candidate is temporarily out of training This is due to the aflliction of a severe cold which while nothing serious has caused trainer G W Langdon to let up on him in his work The latter attributes the son of Ogdens couditipn to the sudden and un ¬ usual change In climatic conditions here and is confident that if the weather grows warmer within the next few days the good colt will conio right out of his present ailment He does not think the letup will seriously affect his condition if the weather warms up soon and it may be possible for him to get him to the post for the big race on May 10 Langdou regards His Majesty too highly however to take any chances that may affect him later on in his career and ho admitted today that His Majesty is a doubtful starter in the big classic He will do all in his power to get the son of Ogden to the post as the colts owner is anxjous to see him carry colors In the Derby this spring His Majesty had trained well since his arrival here this spring and has showed that he Is a colt posses ¬ sing a dazzling turn of speed as well as a disposi ¬ tion to race on over a considerable distance of ground groundOn On account of rainy and unsettled weather there was little work at cither of the local tracks today The only horses that were timed at the Downs were Royal i and Samuel It Meyer which did three eighths in 42 42The The hook of conditions for the spring meeting at Churchill Downs which begins on Derby day May 10 and continues for thirteen racing days will be distributed among horsemen next Wednesday This book In addition to giving the stake entries for the meeting contains the conditions for the overnight purses and handicaps to be run during the first seven days of racing at the Downs this spring The remaining six days will not be programmed until after the meeting starts On the opening day the New Louisville Jockey Club and upward 1 110 miles milesA A majority of the stables at the local tracks rested Sunday and few horses were worked at either Churchill Downs or Douglas Park The Kentucky Derby caiiTlidates Prince Hermis Sam HIrsch Leo chares and Jimmle Gill were all breezed slowly none going faster than a twominute clip The Iwst work of any of the other horses was by a maiden John D Wakefield which went an easy mile in 1483 1483Hundley Hundley Baker worked Busy threeeighths in 3S and Limpet the same distance in I7 while the only twoyearolds that were timed at all were Boots and Saddle which worked with Hiimllo of Itags another member of E 11 Bradloys stable three eighths in ° 7 7One One of the largest tickets in the future hooks on the Derby is one calling for 10100 which is the price a prominent turfman received for his wager of 100 on Jimmie Gill the eligible to the race from the Doerhoefer West stable The boots offered 100 to 1 against this son of Fatherless and this man took all they would stand at that price JImuile Gill Is not taken seriously by form students ns being dangerous in the big race The noted jockey Fddle Taplin was an arrival today and was busy working the horses of James Kverman for whom he will ride here and at La tonia One of the horses that Taplin galloped today was his old favorite Stone Street the Kentucky Derby winner of 1908 Taplin says he never lost a race on Stone Street and as a consequence is much attached to the veteran which bids fair to race in winning form again this spring at eight years old oldC C F Buschemeyer returned from Lexington Satur ¬ day night but went back there today to remain until after his great gelding Hawthorn runs in the Blue Grass Stake next Saturday He reports that Hawthorn could not possibly he in better condition and that the son of Hasings has since his arrival in Lexington won over many who had a leaning to Foundation Helios and other Blue Grass region threeyearolds Hawthorn had a rather narrow es ¬ cape Saturday At the Downs he has a double stall and at Lexington of course his quarters are of the regulation size One of the stable l oys left the lower door open and he laid down in such a position that both his hind feet hung out of tbe doorway He nearly kicked the front of the stall out before he got up but when examined it was as ¬ certained that lie had only scraped a few hairs off one of his fegs A repetition of the experience will be guarded against One noted turfman who has luMn won over to the Hawthorn side xslnco tbe son of Hasting was shipped to Lexington is T C Mc ¬ Dowell owner of The Manager who trained Allan aDale when he won the Kentucky Derby of 1902 McDowell thinks it is doubtful if he ever saw a faster or more courageous threeyearold and he went into ectacies when at the close of Hawthorns mile workout the other day the big gelding ran the final quarter iu 23 He feels sure that with the track at Lexington in as fast a condition as ho had seen it this spring Hawthorn could break most any sort of a record there thereDr Dr C Caun has successfully gelded Nobby for K Spcnce and while he will be out of training for a time in the opinion of that horseman the son of Maria Santa will have a chance to come back later In the year to thegood form that marked hs run ¬ ning as a twoyearold He has lxen a sore disap ¬ pointment to his present owner C II Kuebelkainp as he has not won a race since 0 C Van Meter raced him last fall W F Schiiltes promising twoyearlold edit Noiseless has come out of his recent sickness and trainer Brooks is now again working the son of Sempronius Ho hopes to be able to begin racing him during the Douglas Park meeting Noiseless Is a halfbrother to Gliding Belle and as a yearling last fall showed promise promiseThe The New Louisville Jockey Club has issued this spring a beautiful poster for the meeting which he gins at Churchill Downs on Saturday May 10 and runs for thirteen racing days The poster is deco ¬ rated with a lino picture of last years Kentucky Derby winner Worth in II C Hallenbecks colors with jockey C II Shilling up The coloring used in the 1 1 thogra jihing is a combination of green and yellow which is the standard colors of this asso elation On Saturday with the dogs np and the track heavy the Kentucky Handicap candidate Buckhoru worked a mile ju 140 under restraint It is doubt ¬ ful if there ij a horse in training that is going better than this good son of Broomstick He has grown and spread out since he raced at Juarez early in the winter and moreover is one of the best doers now at the Churchill Downs He is sure to give a good account of himself this spring springWith With twelve starters the Breeders Futurity to IK run at Lexington on May S will be worth 52SOi0 net to the winner The second horse will take lt73 net and the third horse 501 net while the fourth horse will save his stake of 190 When Helios won it last year it was worth 415450 and when The Manager captured It In 1911 it was worth 4S4S The inaugural of this race in 1910 when it was won by Housemaid was worth 254I The Cincinnati Trophy will bo tbe next richest twoyear old event decided on the American turf this season and will be of not much less value than Lexingtons big race raceJ J B Cloher a Chicago turfman was here on his way to Lexington stopping over to see the string of horses in training at the Downs in charge of R Brewster Mr Cloher is a partner In the ownership of this stable which embraces iu its collection of horses the muchtalkedabout twoyearold J B May low He has been at his home In Chicago since the close of racing at Juarez where he spent tho wlnftr wlnftrT T M Green now seven years old in James S Evermans stable at Churchill Downs is training unusually well at present and looks as if he will surely he a come back this spring There are few horses now racing that have a more creditable winning record than this speedy gelding Up to date he has won no less than thirtyeight races and in fortyseven other starts he placed He won eight races as a twoyearold five as a threeyearold fourteen as a fouryearold seven as a fivevearold and four last season as a sixyearold He has earnrtl 18795 which is 2000 more than his sire the great G W Johnson won during his turf career T M Green has three track records to his credit his mile in 1 S never having been beaten at Jacksonville He hold the Douglas Park track record of 14 for one mile and seventy yards and the five and a half furlongs record of 105 at Latonia He was on tho track today as frisky as a twoyearold twoyearoldThe The punch firing given James Griffins Idle Tale recently by Dr B Talbot has proven so effective that the Indications now are that Mr Griffin if he so desires can get the good threeyearold filly ready for racing late in the summer Gritlin has hearil from the J S McCuIlough farm in Illinois that Idle Fancy the dam of Fairy Story and Idle Tale has just foaled a handsome bay colt by the noted race horse Fronteuac She has a chestnut filly now a yearling by Hurst Park Griffin has had taken up by one of his hands at the Fair Grounds track at Urbana 111 three maidens two of which are threeyearolds and one a twoyearold Both the threeyearolds are by Uncommon one Ining out of Searchlight and the other out of Lady Charles The twoyearohl is a sister to Letourno Gritlin will also shortly take up tho thre yearold filly Arminda which is a sister to the noted horse Czar These fillies will bo handled for a time at Urbana and probably will join the Griffin string which is now quartered at Churchill Downs when he ships his horses to Latonia next June They are said to he promising racing prospects Neither of the threeyearold fillies by Uncommon were trained as twoyearolds twoyearoldsCol Col M J Winn and Judge C F Price are ex ¬ pected to reach here next Wednesday or Thursday Upon their arrival the finishing touches will be made at Churchill Downs for the spring meeting though all the improvements laid out at that track l efore Manager Winn went abroad have al ¬ ready been about carried out by Secretary Lyman II Davis and superintendent Frank Keegan A weeks cleanup will put the plant at Churchill Downs in its usual beautiful aspect for Derby day on Satur ¬ day May 10 While there is stable room at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park for not less than ltOO horses the indications are that there will be few vacant stables at either of the tracks when the local racing season begins
