HAWTHORN BEGINS WELL C F BUSCHEMEYERS GREAT GELDING WINS HTS FIRST START AS A THREEYEAROLD Kentucky Derby Favorite Makes Good Impression in inWinning Winning Allowance Race at Lexington Racing RacingConditions Conditions Continue Unfavorable Lexington Ky April 28 Notwithstanding de ¬ cidedly winterish weather and an extremely sloppy track the attendance for the secoud day of the Kentucky goodHawthorn Association spring meeting was good Hawthorn made his first start of 191 in the fourth race which was an allowance affair at one mile for threeyearolds He was after the with ¬ drawal of Lord Marshall without opposition worthy the name and won easily after leading all the way though he was closely attended during the first part of the journey by Weyauoke Strenuous and U Steppa were the other starters The Buschemeyor gelding made a generally good impression i though unite a number of the trainers and other observers expressed the opinion that he does not possess quite the twoyearoldAfter snap he displayed as a twoyearold After dismounting from Hawthorn jockey Loftus said that the gelding had inulergone a great trans ¬ formation from his twoyearold style of running and instead of a desire to dash out into a long lead be felt eager to stay with his company and draw away on call Trainer Trevey was sreatly pleased with Hawthorns showing this afternoon and feels sanguine that lie will carry off the honors In the Blue Grass Stakes and Kentucky Derby A big delegation of Louisville people came over to see Hawthorn run this afternoon including owner C F Buschcuieyer BuschcuieyerThe The first two races went to long shots from the stable of W G Yaiike Wilhite the winner of the lirst race is the property of W II Buckner trainer of the Yanke horses and Korfhage winner of the second race is owned by Applegate Yanke Brad leys Choice the runner up to Korfhage raced dis ¬ appointingly and bore out in the stretch That remarkable old campaigner Merrick won the third race in the colors otJC Milam but he had to stand a drive at the end from Tlllies Nightmare to do it rf Drnv KCuiiqrJeryffoin the K It Bradley stable won the fifth race after a stretch battle with Bar ¬ bara Lapp Gladys Y heavily backed performed noorly Ursiilii Bmma led until well in the stretch in the last rnce but she did not have enough to stand off Sir Catesby and he lieat her out in a drive Aplaster the one about which there was the hottest tip finished far back backComplying Complying with the recommendation of tbe State Racing Commission the Kentucky Association Of ¬ ficial today appointed John T Ireland patrol judge for the remainder of the meeting meetingChairman Chairman Milton Young will approve only those applications for licenses against which no protest has lodgedJockey ever been lodged Jockey J Hanover has accepted terms to ride for II F Carman during tbe Belmont Park and Jamaica meetings Mr Carman wanted to sign Hanover on a years contract but the rider demurred Jockey demurredJockey C Peak will have the mount on John W Schorrs Leochares in the event that he is a starter In the Kentucky Derby Jockey DerbyJockey Borel attributed the poor showing of Gladys Y which was extensively supported in the fifth race to frequent Interference soon after the start
