AFTERMATH OF DERBY DAY Matt J Whin general manager of Churchill Downs is quoted as follows concerning Derby Day and its happenings There never was a race run in Kentucky that was witnessed by a crowd that in numbers com ¬ pared to that which saw the Derby decided at Churchill Downs last Saturday SaturdayOldtimers Oldtimers still talk about the crowds that wit ¬ nessed races in the old days such as the Ten Itroeck and Mollie McCarthy match It must be recollected that since those days accommodations at the Downs art much greater than they were in the long ago and even since last years Derby the widening of the track ophite the clubhouse and at other points has made it possible to accommodate from 40N to 5000 more people than heretofore As a conteiiieiice there can be no doubt that the great ¬ est assemblage ever gathered at Churchill Downs saw Doneralf win the thirtyninth renewal of the Kentucky Derby Presiding Steward Charles F Price said of the day and the Derby It was the biggest afternoons racing I ever saw in Kentucky The crowd was far above any attendance at any previous Kentucky Derby and made the assemblages at the Downs in the old days look tame It was a gathering on a par with the big days at Washington Park Chicago when the American Derby was mil I think for years to come while1 it may be equalled it will not soon be excelled 1 think the pace set by the favorite Ten Point killed that colts chance and while he might not under other circumstances have beaten Don ¬ erail had Ruxton not made so much use of him early in the race he would probably have put up a better finish As the race was run it was all In favor of a rating colt like the winner proved himself to be Restrained more by his rider in the first mile Ten Points speed might have served him in the final quarter with a winning advantage advantageDonerail Donerail the Derby winner was bred by his present owner T P Hayes at his breeding farm hi Scott County Ky He Is named for a small town near the farm of his owner who has long been prominent on the turf both as a trainer and owner of horses He is a son of McGee a horse imported from England by Ed Corrigan and raced In this country by that ttirfnftin with much success The best of his get previous to Donerail Is that good liveyearold Irish Gentleman now in training at Louisville LouisvilleAlgie Algie M the dam of Donerail is by Hanover out of Johnetta by Itramhlc and she traces to a Tennessee family of racing merit Her sire linos are those of Kentucky Derby winners Hanover her sire having gotten Halma winner of the event in IS which In turn sired AllanaIale the victor in the race of 1902 whereas Pramble sire of her grandam got Ren Rrush the Kentucky Derby winner of 1SUC 1SUCDonerail Donerail is a wellturned colt of more than aver ¬ age height being close to 10 hands high lie has never been credited with speed of the sprinting order but what he can do is of the rating sort which tells in his favor in a long race He started 10 times last season winning twice and llnisiilng third six times This season he ran three times previous to the Derby his best race being in the Rlue Urass Stakes at Lexington In which he ran second to Foundation He is eligible for the La tonia Derby to be run on Saturday June 14 and be will have to carry a penalty of live pounds in that event making his weight 127 pounds poundsThe The closest T P Hayes ever before came to winning the Kentucky Derby was in 1001 when his entry annazarro ran second to His Eminence EminenceDonerail Donerail is the longest shot ever to win the Ken ¬ tucky Derby the odds against him in the pari mutuel pools being a shade over 91 to 1 1So So far as can bo learned W J Treacy of Lex ¬ ington Is the biggest winner on Donerail in the future books that were made on the Derby He hdd one ticket of 2500 to 50 and another of 2000 to 40 getting odds of rx to 1
