JOHN T IRELAND TWO OF THE GOOD HORSES RACED BY JOHN T IRELAND LONG AGO JOHN T IRELAND is patrol judge nt Clnirclilll Downs and Is slated for tlio same jol at Douglas Park It being a position in which experience ROCS for a groat deal ho should be a class A patrol judge for he lias certainly boon around with the horses for quite a spell of years Along in the early nineties when racing nourished here and elsewhere all through the west he and his brother Frank raced some capital horses and the firm of Ire ¬ land Bros was right In the front rank of suc ¬ cessful western owners Frank has abandoned the horses and is said to be in the highway to fortune as a dealer in Texan and Mexican lands and other promising ventures in the southwest but John although not racing on a heavy scale as In the past has kept in touch with the turf in a modest way principally with the useful mare Cherryola in recent years yearsAmong Among the good horses raced by Ireland Bros in the long ago Donatcllo was an excellent threeyearold in 1S91 lie was a goodlooking chestnut colt by Ten Broeck Sllpaway and made his first start that year at Washington Park in a purse race which he won by a length from no less a celebrity than Balgowan with three other good ones in Whitney Joe Carter and Keputation behind the latter lie was then unplaced to Marion O Santiago Han Chief and Kacine in the Ionlevard Stakes but made amends a few days afterwards when lie won the Dearliorn Handicap for threeyearolds at a mile rnd an eighth over a slow track Scog gan Bros Tennessee Derby winner Vallera was the favorite and top weight with IK pounds to carry Donatollo bad up 11 and won by a half length from Vallora with the California celebrity Homer third Melanle Lorenzo Philora and Warplot ran unplaced This was a line performance but be was taken up to St Paul and did still better There he Derby at a mile and a half in 2 St Iaul StIaul racing was then of importance and its stake races well worth winning the Derby netting 4550 Kd Corrigan sent bis imported colt Dundee and his fleet lilly Kthel up to run for it and with Monk Overtoil on Dundee and Andy McCarthy on Kthel the Corrigan pair coupled was the favorite at 7 to Dundee carrying 115 pounds and Kthel 117 Daredevil FltapltrlckrrodpiDona tclo and In a great finish brought him home a half length in front of Dundee with Elltel third Pomfrct and Jugurtlm were the unplaced ones To demonstrate that there was no fluke In this high class achievement Donatello shouldered 127 pounds a few days later in the Haniliuo Stakes at a nille and threeeighths and won again but had bis troubles in doing so He was favorite this time at even money and Duudeo second choice nt 2 to 1 but the oldtime California turfman L IT Shlppee bad a slashing big brown Longfellow colt named Lodowic in the race and this one made it so inter ¬ esting for Donatojlo that he only managed to scramble homo first by a short head under Fitzpatrlcks vigorous thirdDonatello riding Dundee was not even placed 1omfret finished third Donatello was not the only good horse raced by Ireland Bros They raced many oast and west that won their full share of money and such fame as may fall to a racer The rillet colt Newton was a fine example He won the Latonla Derby and it was hoped he might prove able to also win Chicagos great race tie American Derby This was in IS02 when the Washington Park track was in as bad condition from heavy rains ns it could possibly be Newton was penalised and carried the limit weight of 127 pounds which proved too much for him and the race fell to that superlative mud runner Carlsbad But he won the Sheridan Stakes of that year and in ISO ran two miles over the same track in 27 which remained the Washington Park record for that distance up to the time Chicagos most famous track passed out of existence as the scene of racing
