GREAT DEMAND FOR REMOUNTS Montreal Quo May 2 Capt E Turner Mend Is here for a few days en route to his ranch on the Peace river Capt Mead has brought a number of English thoroughbreds to Canada during the past few years Including Malamont a young sou of Fly ¬ ing Fox now owned by a Montrealer and Pepperiuo brother of Uronzino Bronzluo was sold to Arthur llorden of Sydnuy Aus not long ago for 0 5000 Pcpperiiio is now in British Columbia and will race there during the comiuig season Malainont will race at Montreal and Toronto Capt Mead is raising polo ponies on his Alberta ranch and has twentylive choice broodmares on the way from England now Thesis mares were all iuated in Bug land with well known polo sires siresCapt Capt Mead sold a large number of horses to the Madcro government during the Mexican war Ho is keen on the subject of cavalry remounts and thinks that Canada is right in taking the lead as a remount countryI producing country I could have sold 50000 cavalry horses during tlie past year said Capt Mead last night it 1 had known where to lay hands on them It is im ¬ possible to get any remounts in Germany or Franco and England has not nearly enough for even a peace footing The Mexican horses are not much good and it was a disgrace to see the kind of animals they had to ride during the trouble there The United States is hopelessly behind as a remount producing country and the selfish breeders of heavy horses try to strangle any effort which is made to breed balfbreds 1 am glad to see that the bureau work in Canada Is l eing appreciated and when tha next war comes as it surely will come Canadians will reap the benefit and at the same time will bis in a position to do a good turn to the old country
