LATONIA RACING FORMFUL FAVORITES ARE WINNING LIONS SHARE OF THE PURSES AT KENTUCKY TRACK. Patronage Continues of Pleasing Proportions in Spite of Unfavorable Climatic Conditions Inquiry Into Big Spirits Showing. Cincinnati, O,, October 21. Disagreeable weather conditions continued at Latonia this afternoon and detracted much from the racing. The attendance that braved the wintry weather was really remarkable. The betting, while dropping considerably from yesterdays total, was still of fair volume, considering the poor mediums for speculation that this afternoons ordinary card furnished. The track was in bad shape and it required a sturdy racer to run in the going with any degree of success. The public had a profitable day, as they manaced to land on four of the winners. Isabella Valle and Font were the beaten favorites. Both were sharp factors iu the racing. Just Reds victory in the fourth race was of the sensational order, lie ruled an overwhelming favorr ite and his many backers were a chagrined lot during the running of the first quarter when Just Red was a distant trailer and apparently hopelessly out of it. He canic with a tremendous rush when fully settled in his stride and, in spite of being forced to go extremely wide into the stretch, he gradually got to the leaders and finally drew out decisively. Jockey Loftus energetic handling of Bac iu the second race was primarily the cause of his victory over The Idol and Candy Box. The trio terminated the six-furlongs journey noses apart. Bac seemed beaten a furlong out, but Loftus managed to keep him on even terms with The Idol and literally lifted him to the finish a nose in advance of that horse. Candy Box, which had saved considerable ground iu turning into the stretch, was going fastest of all at the end and would have won had he been able to get .dear -sailing--earlier. Jockey Gooses handling ,of Big Spirit, the second choice, was unsatisfactory to Presiding Steward Price ami, after interrogating the rider, Patrol Judge Campbell and trainer Chinn, the judge decided to coutinue his investigation. Goose claimed that the reason Big Spirit dropped out of it was because of being sharply cut off by Slartin on Candy Box. Jockey Loftus almost tossed oft the purse when he eased Slarty Lou up in the last seventy yards of the opening race and came near being beaten by Isa-bellc Valle. Slarty Lou had been the leader for the entire trip and had the race well in hand when Loftus began to ease her up. Although tiring badly, she mauaged to pass the finish a neck in advance. Luther proved much the best in the third race and won as his rider pleased, with Jimmie Giil beating U Steppa in the filial stride for second money. Coppertown, after many attempts, finally managed to connect with the long end of a purse when he led all the way in the closing dash. Pierre Dumas furnished an upset in the fifth when he ot to the finish in advance of Ocean Queen and Gar-neau. The two-horse combination, consisting of Bac and Luther, paid 0.00 for , and the three-horse, made up of Just Red, Pierre Dumas and Coppertown. yielded its backers a return of 00.95 for eacli Investment of 2. John Hogan, who officiated as starter during the last Slineral Springs meeting, was among todays visitors. Since the close of the Indiana track Hogan has been doing the starting at various Illinois fair tracks. John C. Ferris arrived today from Victoria, R. C, where he has been campaigning his horses. He reports that fifteen carloads of horses that took part In the far northwestern racing have been shipped to Juarez, to await the opening of that track for Its long winter session.. Among those who have signified an intention of shipping from hero to Juarez and who have engaged cars on the special train leaving here at the close of the Latonia meeting are: Jefferson Livingston, three cars; P. T. Chinn, two cars; Kay Spence, A. L. Kirby, Earl Linell, F. 1. Weir, S. Veiller, W. C. Clancy, Doerhoefer and West and A. B. Spreckels, one car each. Jockey Goose was suspended for five days by the starter for disobedience at the post. John W. Schorr reached a decision today to follow his former custom of wintering his horses at Douglas Park and will ship those he brought here and some ho has at Lexington to Louisville. Birdie Williams. Fred Stone and one or two others will be disposed of, leaving about 25 horses in the establishment to go into winter retirement. Francis J. Pons has sold Grosvenor and Counterpart to Weber and Ward for a reported price of ,000. Slose Goldblatt, traiuer for Jefferson Livingston, was trying to add the horses to his establishment, but made up his mind to get tliem a trifle late. Sir. Pons has ten others that he intends to dispose of before shipping to Charleston. J. L. SIcGiunis, who brought Sam Jackson here to .start in the Kentucky Endurance race, returned yesterday to New York. Sam Jackson will be wintered at Belmont Park. Mr. SIcGinnis intends returning here In the spring with a good band of racers. Fred Auerbach, who will share with Santo Sotille the managerial cares of the Charleston track during the coming winter, arrived today from Charleston and brought with him encouraging reports relative to lacing prospects at Palmetto Park. Applications for stall room, according to Sir. Auerbach. are being received from some of the principal owners in the country. The stakes are also receiving vast attention and every indication points to a high-class and successful meeting. The ring will this year be open to all reputable layers and will be under the direct supervision of Slortimer Slahoney. In the matter of purses, it is the intention of the Charleston management to distribute not less than ,200 daily for the first week and if conditions warrant, the purses will be increased steadily. There will bo one purse of 00 daily, for which the better class of horses are expected to compete. Slariy of the owners here made application to Sir. Auerbach to have stable room reserved for them.
