SUSPENSION FOR MUSGRAYE UNSATISFACTORY HANDLING OF FREDERICK L. LEADS TO OFFICIAL ACTION. Hallenbeck Tlirco-Year-Old Should Have Won Race That Goes to Sir John Johnsons Credit, It Is Maintained Laurel Track Drying Out. Baltimore, Mil., Octoler 21. Old .Sir John Johnson won smother race at Laurel this afternoon. It was his second vietory of the meeting and. was accomplished in a handicap at. live and a half furlongs. Naturally enough, he was the public choice, but lie -should have liiiished second. H. C. Hallenbecks Frederick L., making his lirst appearance since last tqiring at Havre de Grace, would undoubtedly have won with judicious handling. Sir John Johnson and Mnrjoric -V. went out to make the pace from the outset and ran lapped on eacli other, with Frederick L. in third place, to the stretch turn. Then Frederick L. closed up on the pacemakers and looked all over the probable winner uutil Slusgrave got him between the two leaders. Frederick L. was beaten si neck. Tliere was much criticism of Slusgraves ride and at the conclusion of the afternoons sport came an announcement that Slusgrave had. been suspended for the rest of the meeting on account of his handling of the colt. The races were run over a track that was slowly drying out under the influence of a high wind, but still lumpy and holding. The weather was not as comfortable as yesterday, even though the clouds Were giving way to sunshine, for the wind had a touch of winter in it and overcoats were comfortable. The attendance was again large. J. It. Gray Uncle .Timmie has decided to go into winter quarters at the close of the present meeting. Gotelus and the others in his useful string will be Hhipped to Ills farm in Oklahoma. Next year it is Sir. Grays intention to begin his eastern racing iscaron in Canada and he lias made his plans to move Jroin there to Saratoga. He has an abiding faith An his Western-bred youngsters, as well he might sifter what Gotelus lias shown, and he proposes to go after the best of them in 1914. James Butler left for his New York home tonight. Next week his big string of yearlings will be trijd I out over the excellent training track at Kastview Farm, Tarrytown. Those who have had the good fortune to see these youngsters have proclaimed them a particularly promising lot. Harry Breivogel returned from Louisville today. He went to Kentucky to attend to his duties in connection with the racing at Churchill Downs and will now remain at Laurel until the close of the meeting. Shortly thereafter he will leave for Juarez for the winter meeting that opens there next month. Capt. 1. SI. Walker returned from Kentucky with his horses today. The string was sent to 1imlico and will le raced there during the meeting of the Slaryjand Jockey Club that is to open November 1. Thomas Cook, who brought Peter Pan back from Europe for the Keene establishment sale, will return to France, sailing on Saturday next. He left for New York tonight. He will take over fourteen horses belonging to John Sauford, who plans an extensive campaign over the French courses next j-eason. Thirteen of those that will be taken over will be converted into steeplechasers and the fourteenth will be the stallion Voter, which will stand in France. Sir. Sanford has laid his plans for an extensive breeding farm abroad in order that he may have native bred horses for the flat races. This, with the addition of his American jumping string, should make his foreign racing venture a most notable one. Recent work-outs at Laurel were as follows: Adams Express Half mile in 51.
