FAVORITES ARE UNPLACED BUCK KEENON IS ONLY FIRST CHOICE TO SCORE AT LATONIA. Rain Continues to Fall and Track Is in Bad Condition Maud B. L. Wins Race for Two-Year-Old Fillies Impressively. Cincinnati, O., October 23. Wet and gloomy weather, with mist that occasionally hung over the course and obscured the view of the horses duriug some parts of the racing militated against the sport at Latonia this afternoon. Strangely enough and contrary to expectations, another big crowd was in attendance and an outstanding feature of tho afternoon was the large volume of speculation indulged in. The public fared poorly, for all the favorites excepting Buck Keenon, were badly beaten. The racing itself was interesting, most of the winners being forced out to the limit. The live and a half furlongs dash In which two-year-old Allies ran, showed up J. C. Milams Maud B. L. as about the best of her sex and age in local training, for she beat her opponents conimandiugly and this, too, after suffering some interference soon after the start which cost her considerable ground. Bronzewing landed second and Edith W. third. The latter would have been a more serious factor but for going wide into the stretch. Emerald Gem was the favored one in this race, but after showing high speed for the first half she retired 1 precipitately. Harry Lauder and Prince Hermis absorbed most speculative attention iu the mile race, but both ran far below their best form and were distant trailers at the finish. Just Red won the race, with Counterpart and Ymir second and third respectively. The upsets began In the opener, when La Mode, badly ridden, failed to get any part of the purse. Coy . won handily from Cutle B., which was grouped lu the field, with Maud McKee, a first time starter here, third. Orperth and Effendi. the choices for the second race, succumbed to Ocean Queen in the second. Effendi was good enough to land in second place after overcoming interference, but the ground that Orperth lost all the way caused him to be. jjoaten by Garneau for third place. Buck Keenon was overwhelmingly favored in the fifth and he had a close call from being beaten by Stevesta, Borel.s halid riding staving off the defeat. Big Spirit, which was responsible In his last start for an inquiry by Judge Price concerning Gooses handling of him, was a starter in this race and ran in dull fashion. The closing dash resulted in a victory for Marshon over Sam Illrseh by a small margin. Star Actress was the favorite and Keogh steered her wide all the way. She probably disliked the rough going aud dropped cut of contention after going five furlongs. Soeretary Maginn today announced the weights for the Fort Thomas Stakes for two-year-olds, to be run next Saturday. The race has ,000 added and closed with sixty-six nominations. It will likely be worth ,500 to the winner. The field will come from the following: Bringhurst. 123; Black Toney, 119; Hodge, 117; Ralph, 115; Osaple. 104; David Craig. 101; OHagan. 104; Sosius, 104; Brigs Brother, ia5; Bronzewing, 103; Barbara Lane, 103; Ratlna, 103; Minila, 100; Lady Moonet. 95. Ocean Queen and Maud B. L.. comprising the two-horse winning combination, yielded 3.35 for ?2. The three-horse combination was not picked and went to the field backers, who each received .so; Joseph McLennan will depart tomorrow for Laurel to look after the entries to the Charleston stakes which close October 27. Charleston interests will be looked after here by F. J. Bruen and Fred Auerbach, both of whom will be here until after the close of the racing at Latonia. J. W. Johnson will dispose of eleven yearlings and the two-year-olds Mockery, Tomboy and Grev Plume by auction next Monday in the Latonia paddock. The yearlings have been broken and nine in the lot are by Cunard. A. L. Kirby, who will race a division of J. B. Respess string this winter, made reservation todav for nine stalls at Palmetto Park. The horses will be shipped on the Charleston Special, following the close of racing here. J. S. Ward, in charge of Weber and Wards horses, made numerous entries to the Charleston stakes and will campaign this winter some twelve horses, including Solar Star. James Evermans consignment to Charleston will comprise about twenty horses. Increasing weight was responsible for jockey B. Steeles announcement today of his retirement from the saddle. He weighs at present 130 pounds. Steward C. V. Price cautioned jockey Keogh in the last race on account of attempted rough riding while going around the first turn. J. C. Milam will rest Maud B. L., Leo Skolny and several others in his establishment at Lexington the coming winter. He is contemplating sending some of his horses to Charleston. Bradleys Choice, Black Toney and the other horses in E. R. Bradleys establishment, will be shipped to Idle Hour Farm at tho conclusion of the racing here. Bradleys Choice Is taking light exercise dally on the track, but will not bo started again this season, according to owner Bradley. There is no sign of the rain abating and the track will remain in bad condition for at least the remainder of this week.
