i CANADIAN RACING IN A FLOURISHING CONDITION Sport Continues to Enjoy Healthy Growth in Great British Dominion Review of Financial and Other Phases of the Season Recently Brought to a Close tf, , Racing prospered in Canada during the season, recently brought to a close as never before. The exhibits presented in connection with this review of the financial and other aspects of the Canadian season show that more money was distributed among owners in stakes and purses than ever and the various racing associations are reputed to have enjoyed a degree of financial prosperity commensurate with their liberality. Canadian racing received a great impetus in 1511 and 1912 as one of the direct results of the suspension of racing on the New York tracks. The resumption of New York racing on a limited scate this season did not have any deterrent effect, of appreciable proportions on the sport in Canada, as had been feared In some quarters. While some of the important eastern stables naturally remained away from Canada in consequence of the revival of the sport in their own territory, the various Canadian meetings did not suffer for lack of suliicient racing material of good quality. The same high standard was adhered to that marked the racing of the immediately preceding years and the sport was patronized in such fashion as to leave no room for doubt of Its popularity among the Canadians. The addition of the Ottawa and Dorval tracks to the list of courses yielding allegiance to the Canadian Racing Associations was aincng the developments of the season. At each of these new tracks a beginning v.ss made that warrants the conclusion that both are destined to become important factors in Canadian racing of the future. Even had not the circuit been strengthened by the addition of these tracks all Canadian records would have been broken in the item of aggregate distribution, which exceeded by nearly 00,-M the showing of the year preceding the passage of the Miller bill. Whose provisions restrict Canadian meetings to fourteen days annually for each association. The contributions by the individual associations are still less than they were prior to the passage of the Miller bill, because the racing time lias been greatly reduced, but the daily average distribution has been showing consistent and gratifying gains and If is not unreasonable to expect that the time will come when the various associations will distribute as much money among the horsemen for fourteen days racing as they did for much longer periods under the old conditions. It is assured that racing conditions in Canada next year will be even, more inviting than they were this season. The idle time between meetings, which was materially decreased this season, will be further reduced, because of the inclusion of the new tracks. Some of the racing associations have already announced ambitious plans for next seasons sport and, all in all, the Canadian outlook should afford much gratification to the devotees of thoroughbred racing. Because of the inclusion of the Ottawa and Dorval tracks, witli their lower dailv offerings, the general average of the Canadian Racing Associations tracks fell a trifle short of the 1912 , figure of ,20S. All of the older tracks increased their daily average and it may bo expected tltat when the new organizations got on their feet, so to speak, there will be a marked increase in the general average. Mr. Nixon saddled 30 winners for his employer in Canada, whose earnings amounted to 0,540. This showing falls short of the phenomenal record made by J. F. Schorr over the Canadian courses the preceding year, when he made a Canadian record by saddling 51 winners, with earnings of 9,415. Still, Mr. Nixons showing is far above the average for the Canadian circuit. Next to him in point of winners saddled on the tracks of eastern Canada come II. G. Bedwell and A. G. Weston with a record of 22 each, and W. M. Martin, who handles the Amos Turney horses, with a record of 20. The honors for British Columbia fell to M. Garrity, with 24 winners.
