BEDWELL HOUSES IN TRIM WESTERNER SCORES DOUBLE AT CHARLESTON WITH RUNWAY AND PARDNER. Cold Wave Causes Local Patronage to Slump, but Regulars Are Out in Force Two Favorites Successful. Charleston, S. C, December 2. A wintry brand of weather, coupled with an ordinary program, caused a slump in local patronage, at Palmetto Park today, but tbe regulars were out in force and gave the llfteen layers plenty of action during the afternoon. The grandstand occupants stood the cold uncomplainingly and found consolation in the good racing that materialized. The supposedly wise set were astray in their calculations, for only two favorites scored, the; winning choices being Chilton King and Trade Mark. Both were at odds-on. The worst upset that the talent experienced came in the fourth race when Dartworth. from J. L. Holland s stable, succumbed In a hard drive to Pardner, owned by II. !. Bedwell. The latter scored a double for the day. Runway having accounted for the opening dash. "Daggle" Smith attempted a coup in the opener with Mansou, which was backed to the exclusion of the otlur starters. In the running the colt failed to figure prominently and finished unplaced. The closest finish of the afternoon developed in the fifth race when Aniericus and Amoret fought it out In resolute fashion for the entire length of the stretch and came to the finish noses apart, with Aniericus in the van. Merry Lad was regarded as best In the closing dash, but, though ho showed a performance the equal of his winning one of yesterday, he was not good enough to overhaul Over thi Sands, which beat him a length and a half. Considering the bleak weather, todays attendance was of generous proportions. The layers reported betting brisk. , There was a collision this morning on the track which terminated fatally for W. Walkers White Heat, sister to Hawthorn. She caromed Into Trap, owned by 15. 15. Cochran. Doth horses fell, but Trap came out of the mishap in fairly good shape. White Heat sustained such severe injury that it was found necessary to destroy her. Jockey E. Carter, who was astride White Heat, received a fracture of the collar-Nine. Jockey J. Henry was taken suddenly ill before the first race and had to cancel all his riding engagements for the day. IV. A. Brndy, who served as presiding steward over the Vancouver race meeting last summer, was an arrival today. T. Cuddy, of New Orleans, who in the past campaigned a small stable of racers, arrived today from the southern city and is in quest of some likely material to race here. Secretary Nathanson has a list of fifty-one riders that are available to accent mounts at this track. The management today announced that next Friday would be ladles day and that the fair sex would be the guests of the management on that occasion. Jockey W. Goose, brother of Roscoe Goose, had his first mount today when he rode his employers horse, Colfax, in the opening race. There were plenty of trials this morning over the Palmetto Park track, hut slow work was the rule on aeount of the dead going. Sherlock Holmes Three-quarters in 1:20. Sir Denrah Ilsilf mile in 51. Starbottle Three-quarters in 1:22. Trumps Five-eighths in 1:07.
