MUD RUNNERS GET A CHANCE HEAVY SHOWERS FALL AT CHARLESTON AND TRACK CONDITIONS CHANGE. Marshon Beats Loan Shark for First Money in Selling Handicap Loretta Dvyer Wins Another Purse for S. H. Kunz. Charleston. S. C, December 24. For the first time since the meeting at Palmetto Park began, the races were run over a muddy track this atternoon. Heavy showers fell all morning anil continued in-terniittently during the afternoon. The change in the going resulted in numerous withdrawals anil the fields in a majority of instances were materially re-dtnvd hy scratching. The change in the troinf? also atfected the chances of some of the starters, but the public showed that they had a good line on the mud runners, as all of the purses were won by well-backed horses. There was especially heavy support for Loretta Dwyer, winner of the third race, and her victory meant that the layers received a scorching. The closest linlsh of the afternoon caine with the rnnulug of the closing race, in which Billle Maker beat 1atiy Regan a neck for tirst money. The feature race, a handicap at one mile, was especially well contested and the greatly improved Marshon beat Loan Shark a scant half length after a long and hard stretch drive. Penniless, making her tirst effort since September, was so well supported in the second race that she went to the post at odds-ou. She finished third and the state of the going may have had something to do with her poor performance. Jockey Callahan was taken sick after riding Malik lu the second race and was forced to cancel his other engagements for the afternoon. Steward E. C. Smith, representing the Jockey Cluli, has begun taking applications for 1914 licenses from trainers and jockeys here witli a view to siniplyfying the work later. Algernon Dainger-lield. assistant secretary of the Jockey club, may arrive next week to help out in the license matter. 1 After working three-quarters handily in 1:10 today.
