l STAKE and0ES TO LOCHIEL EXTREME OUTSIDER IN BETTING WINS ROBERT E. LEE HANDICAP AT CHARLESTON. Contestants in Holiday Feature at Palmetto Park Race Like Cavalry Troop Much Improved Ancon Again Beats Good Opposition. Charleston, S. C, January 19. Responding to a terrific drive in the gamest kind or fashion, II. G. Bedwells Lochiel, the extreme outsider, got up iu the last Tew strides to win the ,000 Koljert E. Lee Handicap, which featured todays holiday card at Palmetto Park, from G. M. Miller and Sir John Johnson. Noses separated the latter two and John Furlong, the favorite, followed closely. The race was probably the best decided during this meeting, all the starters having ample opportunity to display their ability, due- to ihe clean-cut fashion in which it was run. At one period just after the lield rounded into the stretch, tin- sextette were iu cavalry alignment, with their chances on a par to get to the finish first. Turner gave the winner a masterly ride that was the deciding factor in the outcome of the race-. The great crowd thai gathered at the course was rewarded by spectacular sport, all the races being hard fought and exciting. Speculators fared worse than on any previous day ot the season, and the fourteen layers reaped a rick harvest. Some of the winners were neglected. The much underrated An-i-oii, which has been shifted from stable to stable with each succeeding victory, and continues to win despite the constant change or trainers, -again came into the limelight when he cantered -home in advance or the good band r sprinters engaged in the third race. His iicrformaiice this afternoon was the lK-st he has shown at the meeting, for he came from a long way back and stood a hard drive to dispose of Celesta and Brave Cuitardcr. J. W. .May uncovered a possible crack in J. G. Greeners juvenile. Martiuos, starting in the opener. Ihe colt was considered a "good thing," but suffered defeat on account of his lack of racing experience. The Dcromle-Bcdwell imbroglio had a happy ending this morning when trainer W. M. Carter, acting tor Thomas Fortune Kyan, took over Derondes contract for a consideration said to be ,000. The contract still has three years to run and as the rider has shown much promise he should develop rapidlv and be among the top-notchers of this season. Jefferson Livingston was also eager to secure the contract on this hoy and was about to submit a goinl offer to Bedwell, but refrained on learning that Mr. Ryans agent had practically closed for the jockeys services. T. J. Brown has received several offers for the contract on his apprentice, F. Murphy. II. G. Bed-well was anxious to secure the lad, but Brown has practicallv closed with Amos Turney for first call on the rider for the Canadian circuit during the coming summer. Joe Kelly, manager of the Toledo baseball club, was a visitor at Palmetto Park this afternoon. Louise Travers was lame while going to the post for the second race, which probably accounted for her poor showing. Ancons victory this afternoon was the sixth Iu- has scored here this season. K 1. Agnelly arrived from New Orleans this morning with L. A. Seregnis string, which includes the mares Camarada and Nada Mas. Starter James Milton made a clean sheet of the schooling list today.
