SIR JOHN JOHNSON acted badly at the post, but showed the most early speed and. setting the pace to the last eighth, tired slightly near the end. JOHN ll RLONG was under restraint to the hist quarter and moved up gamely when called on. but tired in the final drive. REPUBLICAN retired after going a good three-quarters.
