RACING IN FAR AWAY JAVA. Among the Australians who have been doing well in Java, is II. Moran. who, during an eight months stay, trained thirty-one and rode twenty-three winners and a dead heat. Moran says that to anyone accustomed to racing in Australia, the sport in Java Is decidedly tame, the largest field at any meeting during the past season being eleven. Messrs. Soseman and Koch are the principal owners, and what little bookmaking is transacted at meetings in Java is on behalf of the clubs. They stand any loss, and pocket any profits made by their representatives. Jockeys are not allowed to bet, except through the owner or trainer witli whom they are associated. The principal meetings in Java -are held at Bata-via, Samarang and Bandeong, the latter being a three days fixture, with the program including races for professional, amateur and native riders. This year racing will commence at Batavia in May. Moran tells iii that the Europeans do not accord racing much snpport in Java, hut that the natives patronize it freely in fact, without them there would scarcely he anyone at the meetings. They work up plenty of excitement, too. They do not bother about the names of the horses, but loudly proclaim the prospects of Nos. 1, 2. .!. etc., according to the comoetitors numbered saddlecloth. The fee for a winning mount is slightly over 0 but there is generally an addition in the way of a "present" and, for a losing one. 0. There are about half a dozen Australian jockeys in Java, but In Morans opinion any boy who is getting even a fair amount of riding in Australia is better off here. Some jockeys under disqualification in Australia have made the mistake of thinking they could ride in Java, but though possession of a license is unnecessary, a clearance from the Australian Jockey Club or Associated Racing Clubs is imperative.
