NOTES OF THE TURF FROM OTHER LANDS. Having failed in his mission abroad, the American steeplechaser Highbridge left Newmarket. Eng., January 7 for shipment back to the Fnited States. W. Bullock, who rode Signorinetta when she won the Derby and Oaks and who has been riding abroad for the past couple of seasous, is wintering at Ayr and will be riding in England during the coming season. Vignette, a three-year-old thoroughbred in W. natulans stable at Chantiily, fell at exercize recently and hud to be killed. It is stated that the carcass was given to the poor of Chantiily to be used as food. Of the twenty-two jockeys that rode in Hat races in Denmark last year, eight were unsuccessful. J. Allen wound up at the head of the winning list with eleven victories out of fifty-four attempts. T. Wil-niot coming second with ten wins. The latter also rode four winners under jumping rules. At the Brookleigh Stud. Llscombe. Leighton Buzzard, on New Years Day, at 5 a. in.. -Mr. 10. W. Robinsons Vademecuni toaled a brown colt by The Tower. This is doubtless the lirst thoroughbred mare to foal this year and it would have been a yearling had it been foaled six hours earlier. It is announced that Richard Croker has declined an offer of considerable magnitude for Orby. the Epsom and Irish Derby hero of 1907. It is reported that a figure suggested by a would-be purchaser of the stallion exceeded that ever paid for an Irish sire, but Mr. Croker returned the answer: "No money would buy Orby; he is not for sale." W. Higgs recently gave a farewell supper to Bathos stable, at Alfriston. upon relinquishing his connection with it as a jockey. Higgs gave up riding with the conclusion of the meeting at Ling-tiebl in November. lie ranked with the best in England as a rider and retired from the saddle a wealthy man. The Vienna sporting papers state that at the coining general meeting of the Austrian Jockey Chili. Prince Alexander von Solms-Brauufels will hand in his resignation as president. Prince Christian Kraft von nohenlohe-Oehriiigeii is spoken of as his successor as president, while his place on the directing committee will probably be taken by Count Dionys Wenckheim.
