LAYERS FEELING THE PINCH LOSSES RECENTLY SUSTAINED RESULT IN WITHDRAWALS AT CHARLESTON. Selling Platers of Cheaper Class Furnish Days Racing Plunge on Coppertown Goes Wronu Because of His Riders Incompetency. Charleston. S. C January 20. The poorer grade of horses were given ample opportunity at Palmett Park this afternoon, as all the races were with selling conditions and at short distances. The weather was again ideal and the racing was witnessed by a big crowd. Heuvy losses that most of the layers sustained yesterday brought about a reduction in their ranks this afternoon and only ten quoted odds. As favorites anil second choices were the contenders in most of the finishes the layers aam lost. The only real break in their favor came in the fifth race, when Coppertown, an overwhelm ingly backed first choice, tinished in third place. His failure was due to poor handling and frequent interference from which he suffered during the run ning. The victory of Plain Ann in the closing race at long odds was unexpected. Her owner considered her chances so lightly that he made an effort this morning to have her excused from starting, and .niy th- fact that he would have had to pay to get - her out of the race caused him to send her to the post. .lames W. Bean, a well-known Washington co:i tractor who is racing a small string here in charge of J. A. Sallord, was an arrival this morning, lie was accompanied by George Patterson. James P. Ross, superintendent of the Kentucky Associations track at Lexington, is here in the il-terest of the stakes to be run during the Lexington spring meeting. He will remain for the rest of the week. h. Joyner purchased the plater Gerrard from J. G. Wagnon. A. R. Bresler and trainer Wayne Lewis have parted and the former will in the future handle bs own horses.
