I DISAGREEABLE DAY AT CHARLESTON. Cold and Rainy Weather Causes Discomfort to Patrons of Racing at Palmetto Park. Charleston, S. C, Feb. 13. It was raining and cold here this afternoon. It was quite the severest weather that racegoers in these parts have experienced this season. The disagreeable conditions brought about a big decrease in the attendance and made the racing uninteresting. The track was muddy and sturdier racers took the purses. Favorites faired fairly well half of the card being won hy them. A handicap at seven furlongs served as the feature aud was won hy Feather Duster, the odds-on choice, with Sherlock Holmes second and the extreme outsider, Prince Ahmed, third. Two-year-olds began the siKirt with a contest at half a mile, ldiola, the favorite, led her opponents for most of the way and finished a good margin in advance of Finalee, the second choice. Jesse Jr., a lirst-time starter and well backed at long odds, was third. Gallant ISov, which had been acquired by John Ilogan from j. . Talbott previous lo the miming ot" the liflh race, was intended as a good thing and he Mattered his backers until in the last twenty yards Volthorpe, the favorite, overhauled him and "won by a head. Gallant Boy ran in Talhotts interest in this race. Only nine layers were in line this afternoon. Speculation was brisk, all the regulars leiiig on hand. Secretary Nathanson today announced two races for the Derby eligibles to enable them to get thoroughly conditioned for the rich tixture that will Ik; run February 2S. The first of these races will he the Derby Preliminary Handicap, at one mile, and will be run February 20. The Derby Trial at one mile and a sixteenth will follow four days later. Bookmaker Al Hani", who has a supposed grievance against owner Frank Brown, advanced Volthorpe 00 over his entered price of 00. but Mr. Broun retained him with the customary advance. Al Kohrbaek, general manager of the Connaught Park Jockey Club, at Ottawa, who has been here for a week or ten days, left for Norfolk tonight. He will visit the Latonia and Louisville tracks before returning to Canada. S. II. Ilolman, manager of the Dorval Jockey Club, is expected here from Juarez tomorrow or Monday. His mission is to interest horsemen in the stakes to be run at the new .Montreal track during the coming season. . F. E. Brown is among the horsemen who have decided to race on the Canadian circuit during the coming season. II. will probably ship directly to Toronto at the conclusion of the Phnlico meeting. G. W. Langdon, acting for J. W. Messervy, has obtained a call on the services of jockey It. Goo--e for the Derhys to lu run in Kentucky this spring. The Messervy representative in the Latonia and Ivoiiisviile Derhys will probably be the lilly Addle M. The latter was tired on the ankles last fall and is in grand shape just now.
