COMMENT ON MARYLAND SITUATION. The legislative correspondent of the Baltimore News writes that paper from Annapolis as follows: The .Indiciarv Committees of both houses of the legislature which have in hand anti-race track gambling bills are disused to go slowly in reiwrting, so as to see what else on the subject is to be introduced. Indications are that before the time limit on the pending bills expires there will be introduced some new regulatory measure with a view lo covering the whole held and behind which the race track people, will throw their intluence to prevent the enactment of some law that will put them all out of business. While Speaker Trippe of the House has been contemplating the framing of a state-wide bill wita powers to regulate all racing and betting on the big tracks without interfering with the county fairs, he has not. vet done so. and it is understood that he will at the earliest opportunity confer with Senator Hammond of Howard, who has offered a statewide commission hill. s the Hammond bill was introduced in a rather incomplete shape for parliamentary reasons, it is iiltogether probable that Mr. Trippe and Mr. Hammond may agree on a new draft as a substitute, and that such a measure may be passed. "It seems to be recognized here that unless some state-wide commission bill is enacted into law it will be almost impossible to prevent the passage f an anti-gambling bill that will put all of the big tracks out of business. . "Senator Archer of Harford, in whose county is located the track that has drawn a steady fire of criticism Havre de Grace has not yet indicated his stand on the bill introduced by Senator Williams of Cecil, and which would repeal the act under which the Havre de Grace concern was organized. "It Is however, said that he will not support the Williams hill, but will offer an amendment which will wipe out the Harford County Racing Commission and provide for a new commission to be named by the governor and at the same time make it manda-torv that the pari-mutuel system of betting be substituted for bookmakers."
