MILE MAKE AGAIN REDUCED CHRISTOPHINE CREATES NEW AMERICAN RECORD OF 1:3G1 FOR DISTANCE. Sensational Feat Is Accomplished by Seymour Vcil-Icrs Three-Year-Old Filly in Winning Overnight Handicap at Juarez. 121 Paso, Tex.. March 11. The Juarez track was the scene of a sensational performance this afternoon, when, for the second time during the present meeting, the American record for one mile was reduced. On January 18. last, Jefferson Livingstons live-year-old gelding, Bonne Chance, created a new American mile record of 1:37. displacing the longstanding mark of l:37f.. which had stood to the credit of Centre Shot since BIOS. Today Bonne Chance lost the distinction of figuring longer as the record holder when Seymour Veillers speedy three-year-old filly, Christophine, by Ilaudit Emma Jrauuniillcr, carrying 102 pounds, ran the distance in 1 f. i" winning the Toluca Handicap, an overnight event which served as the days feature. Christophine lias been racing in greatly improved form of late and ruled the public choice among the seven that contested the race. Her opposition embraced some of the best milers in training here and her victory was clear cut and decisive. She was ridden by jockey A. Mutt, who reserved her in the early stages behind the terrifically fast pace set by Curlicue and Pan Zareta, and sent her into the lead in the homestretch. When the weary pacemakers quit, she went on and was followed most closely to the finish by Bert Getty, which came from far back in the latter part of the race. The fractional time of the race tells a story of well-sustained speed that made the reduction of the record iwssible. The first quarter was run in 234f.. the half in I.V-. and the three-quarters in 1:11. The feat was the more notable from the fact that it was accomplished in spite of a brisk wind that was blowing. It is noteworthy in passing that last season Christophine was a stablemate, while the property of .1. N. Camden, of Bonne Chance, whose record she displaced. Christophine was the only pronounced lirst choice to score during the day. Tile opening race was for two-year-oids and ai- forded Maznik the opportunity to score his second r victory in succession for K. Ripley. This youngster is now racing up to the form expected of him when he whs a member of the stable of Henry MeDaniel. front whom his present owner recently purchased him. He raced out with Milton Barber from the beginning today and ran away from that horse at the end. .1. 1. Clayton bid him up from 1914.sh00 to XSOO. but Ie was protected and bought in. Jost-liua Zarate. tlje favorite of this race, finished third. fiord Khun, which had started 03 times since he last previously entered the winners circle, at Laurel, October M. 1912, was returned winner of the second race, in which the contestants were practically all "has hcens." He was one of the betting choices. May I... well-backed favorite for the third race, was unlucky to lose. Shulllcd back in the early running, she closed a big gap and lost to Senator .lames by only : neck. The winner was a forward contender throughout and assumed the lead when Stella Graiuc. an outsider, that set the pace, tired. When Edinoud Adams, favorite for the fifth race, failed to linish in the money, it was the lirst time hat he had run unplaced in many a start. Poor luck at the start, was partly responsible for his failure today. Tiie race was won by Seneca, one of the second choices, which appears to have regained his good form. l.oue Star. Inlau and I .utter Hall figured in a spirited finish in the closing dash. The lirst named got the decision by a nos: Superl. which had been hacked into equal favoritism with the winner, was the victim of bad racing luck and finished far back. Jockey O. C. Warren, who was ruled off last summer at Vancouver, has received ollicial notice from Presiding Judge Thomas J. Wellniaii. and Associate Judge Robert F. heighten, that he has been restored to good standing. Jockey Troxler, who was the cause of an accident to Foxy Mary and jockey G. W. Carroll in the second" race of the day. was suspended for the remainder of the meeting by the stewards for rough riding. Jefferson Livingstons two-year-olds, Ed Howard and Marie Oltrb-n. worked together a phenomenally fast half mile this morning, the fractionate follow-.ng- 1 r,. "1. 10, pulled up. Charles l.ergin received stake blanks for various n ectings in eastern Canada and distributed them among the horsemen today. There will be a sale of horses in the Juarez paddock Saturday. Frank D. Weir and others will contribute horses to the sale. T. F. Garner will retire from racing and is offering all his horses for sale. During the present meeting SIS horses have started at Juarez. There are more than KM horses quartered at the track that have not faced the barrier during the meeting. Old Gotch. a three-vear-old owned by Joe Tigne, has the distiuetion or having taken part in the greatest number of races, he having started no less thau twenty-eight times.
