NOTES OF THE TURF. Former starter Kichard Dwyer has embarked in business in San Francisco. Price McKinney was at Lexington yesterday for llie purpose of looking over his royally -bred band of thoroughbreds at Wickliffo St ml. Word has been received that S. S. lowland, a member .f the Jockey Club, was injured in an automobile accident in Paris recently. Mr. liow-l.mds ankle was fractured and he was badly hriiised about the head and body. Tho Oakland and Tnnforan tracks are being kept up bv the New California Jockey Club. James Grant remains in charge of tlie Oakland course. San Franciscans are hopeful that conditions eventually will permit a revival of racing in that locality. An effort is being made to have tlie spring meeting of the Meadow Brook Steeplechase Association run over Harrv Pavne Whitneys race course in West-burv. Last .-eason, and for several years back, the" races of the Meadow P.rook Association were decided at Belmont Park Terminal. News comes from Norfolk that Mortimer Mahoney will not have charge of tlie advance information department this spring at the Jamestown .To.ckey Clubs track, the story having it that he lias declined to accept re-apiwiuiment because of alleged friction with tlie management last fall. Bob Levy, manager of tlie track, is said to have unavailingly urged Mahoney to retain the nosition. for which Arthur N. Klrod is now being mentioned. "According to Auteuil-Longchamp, " says a French correspondent, "another attempt is about to be made bv a group of our best owners in favor of the re-establishment of liookmaking in France. 1 have often given my opinion upon tlie question, and I repeat that never will tlie French government tolerate the slightcsr competion raised against the official totalizator. Certainly, last years falling off in the pari niutuel takings is important, but this is due to the financial crisis now prevailing, not only in France, hut all through Europe, and although I am greatlv in favor of tlie return of our pencillcrs. I think we must discard tlie hope once for all."
