FAVORITES CONTINUE TO FAIL BACKERS. Chilton Qticen Only First Choice to Finish First at Palmetto Park. Charleston, S. C, March 11. Summeiiike weather prevailed today and brought with it an outpouring of the full force of racing visitors at Palmetto Park. The sport was interesting, but the public again fared poorly, as live choices failed them, Chilton Queen being the only favorite to score. The incidents of tlic afternoon included a disqualification, the breaking of a leg by one of the starters and the fall of a rider. The disqualification camo iu the lifth race when Gallant Roy, the favorite, which finished in second place a short margin behind Spellbound, was set back to last place for having interfered with Buzz Around in the linal furlong. Buzz Around was probably best in the race, but Murphy piloted him all over the track in the early stages and when trying to get through along the inner rail -in the stretch, McTaggart allowed Gallant Boy lo cut her off. The displacement of Gallant Boy gave third money to Ella Grane. The career of Flying Footsteps terminated when she broke one of her front legs close to the ankle luring the second race and was destroyed to relieve her misery. She was running in a prominent position at the time of the accident. Her elimination made it easy for Chilton Queen to win. Flying Foosteps was owned by Lotta Gladstone, a well-known ac-I ress. The opener, in which eleven youngsters engaged, brought witli it a spill in which Thalia, with jockey obert up. went down. The rider was badly shaken up. II. D. Brown was a visitor at Palmetto Park this afternoon. He arrived from Jacksonville this morn-. ing and departed for New York tonight. While in California he purchased an orange grove of 150 acres which he will subdivide and sell in small plots. He investigated conditions in the vicinity of San Diego from the standpoint of racing and gave it out as his impression that a winter meeting at that point would not be feasible. T. H. Cook was another arrival. He came from New York and will remain for a few days to take in the races. Cook has arranged to take another consignment of the Sanford horses to France this spring. Jockey Obert was shaken up a bit as a result of his fall while riding the two-year-old Thalia. He was unconscious for a time4 but recovered rapidly and was iu good enough condition to leave for his quarters in the city during the afternoon. W. R. Fngstroni received a telegram from California this morning, which brought news of the death of bookmaker Joseph Schreiber, who succumbed yesterday to a complication of diseases. Mr. Schreiber raced a useful string on the Kentucky tracks hist season. Tom Kiley. another well-known turfman, died yesterday. Harry White received a telegram in forming him of his death in Fast St. Louis. Kiley at one time trained a formidable string of horses: for Hankins and Johnson, which included among their number Eguiout and Terra Cotta. Charlie Ellison will leave tomorrow night for Hot Springs. Ark., where he will rest until the opening of the Kentucky season. S. A. Clopton will leave for the same place Saturday, while W. R. Engstrom and T. F. Buckley will go there at the conclusion of 1 lie Palmetto Park meeting. Horses that won the lirst. three purses this afternoon were the property of owners that had not previously won a purse during this meeting. Rescue Goose returned this morning from Louis ville. His brother. W. Goose, will be here tomorrow. Jockey C. Peak anulied for a license this afternoon and will resume riding "within the next few days. Czar Michael had a recurrence of his old trouble and bled profusely after going the first quarter in the fourth race. W. M. Murray today received notification of his appointment as starter for the meetings at Delori-mer Park. Montreal. The ti-.ck at Palmetto Park this morning was crowded with horses.
