MORE RAIN AT CHARLESTON PALMETTO PARK TRACK CONDITIONS AGAIN FAVOR MUD RUNNERS. For Third Day in Succession, One Lone Favorite Is Successful Susan B. Is Returned Winner of Handicap. Charleston, S. C, March 12. A sudden change to freezing weather militated against the racing this afternoon and caused a big reduction in attendance. Hard rain which began at midnight continued until the early hours this morning ami converted the track into bad condition. Some of the races, as a result, suffered considerably by withdrawals. The handicap, for which eleven were originally named, was reduced to live starters, running in the interest of four owners. Susan B. and Carlton G., representing 1. M. Hedrick as an entry, ruled favorite, with Ancon next in demand. Susan B., running to her best form in the going, won well in hand, over Ancon. with Carlton O. in advance of the others. Jefferson Livingstons colors were seen for the lirst time here when Princess Callaway made her debut in the handicap. She ran a good race ami probably will earn brackets before she leaves here. The public again had a disastrous experience. Susan B. was the only favorite which managed to win. The failure of the choices began in the opener, when Bundle of Rags managed to get up in tne last stride to beat Malik a nose, with the same margin separating the latter from Jezail, the favorite. Dally Waters was tin? choice in the second, but she never figured prominently in the running and finished far back. Tony W. won handily over Theo Cook. Big Iipier was an intended "good thing" in the third, but her chances were not improved by th handling .Martin gave her and Ethelburg II. scored a handy victory. The inconsistent LAiglon was in a running mood in the fifth and led for the entire trip, while Ford Mai beat the poorly handled favorite, Tom King, for second place. The closing dash found Jacob P.unn the favorite, but he went far below his previous cnod showing and landed third to Milton B. and Helen M. J. Hanson today purchased the three-year-old Surpassing from R. F. Carman and turned the colt over to Elijah Brewster. Mr. Hanson, who came down from Dayton. Ohio, a few days ago, contemplates purchasing several horses. He is also negotiating with R. F. Carman for the lilly Luria. F. I refold sold Hans Creek to J. W. Messervy. The horse will be used for saddling purposes. J. W. Hedrick claimed Big Dipper after she was beaten in the third race and then sold her back to M. A. Col ton. Jockey Rightmire departed for Xew York tonight to remain for a couple of weeks. He will rejoin the Carman stable in Kentucky. Tom Cook, who took the Sanford horses to France last fall, received a cablegram yesterday that La Tosca II. had foaled a colt by Isulor. The youngster is a brother to Sir John Johnson.
