THE HENDRIE HORSES AT HAMILTON. Hamilton, Out.. March 1-. The Hon. John S. llendrie has but one entry in the Kings Plate at Toronto, that being Slipper Day, the consistent little lilly which started seven times as a two-year-old, scoring two lirsts. three seconds and two thirds. It will be the lirst time in many years that the Valley Farm has placed its dependence on but one horse in the race for the Kiiigj Guineas, the blue ribbon event of the Canadian turf. A trip to the Valley Farm found trainer Eddie AVhyte putting the llendrie thoroughbreds through their paces in preparation for spring campaigning. Opening day at the Woodbine is two mouths away, but Whyte is a firm believer in an early start. Slipper Day did not show her best form last season owing to a deformed knee, which worried her a great ileal, but she has wintered well, and the deformity, while still noticeable, is not likely to bother her this season. Trainer Wh.vte firmly believes that Slipper Day is the speediest lilly ever bred in Canada, but on top of this assertion he added that Reehive, the hope of the Giddings stable, would carry off the Kings Guineas. Another Martimas lilly. the property of George M. Hemlrie, is at the Valley Farm, but was not entered in Hie Plato owing lo the fact that she hail no racing experience last year. This lilly, Martina, is out of Placena, and is a half-sister to Parmer, a Kings Plate winner. Martina is a big, rangy lilly. and will make her debut in one of the Canadian-bred events. Martimas is sire to a couple of racy -looking two-vear olds. One of these is a brother to Glimmer, and is a chestnut eolt out of Flicker. As a yearling he showed real good form in the bitter part of the 1913 season, and has tilled out well during the wilder. Last Spark is the name which lias been chosen for this colt, which bears many of the marks of his sire. Another likely-looking youngster is Splutter, by .Martimas--Splash. Splitter is "also a chestnut colt, and is a brother to White Caps, u Canadian-bred which has c-arircd the llendrie colors to victory on more than one occasion. Splutter also carries many of his sires markings, and still another Martimas offspring which bears strong resemblance to his progenitor is the gelding, John Peel, out of Lin lie. r" A smart-looking brown filly, Odds On, by Martimas Otslketa. the property of George M. llendrie, is also under trainer Whytes care at the farm. Other horses belonging to George M., at the farm are Fergus, a gelding bred by Walter Parmer, in Kentucky, and purchased by Mr. llendrie last year, and Red Fire, a bay colt bv Red Fox II. Shinion-ese. Many believe "this colt to be among the best at the farm, but Mr. Whyte claims he has shown nothing to be deserving of such touting. Still another promising two-year-old which will carry the brown and yellow this season is the gelding David Gillies, named after David Gillies, of Hamilton, by David Garriek Placena. Trainer Whyte says Deiiham will never again attend the races. He was one of the fastest horses ever bred in Canada, but he was bad-footed and as a result was seldom in condition to run to his top form. Local enthusiasts will remember how Dcnham took Jack Atkins measure at the Hamilton track in a six-furlongs race a few years ago in fast time. Tankard, a Ilurgoinaster gelding, which won brackets hist year as a three-year-old, is looking good, and another which should be heard from this spring is Privet Petal, purchased by the Hendries from Mrs. Livingston last year. There are now thirteen yearlings at the farm, seven of these being by Martimas, four by Harvey and one by David Garriek. There are twenty broodmares, most of which are in foal, and foals .ire expected to arrive at any time. Most of them were served by .Martimas, but a real acquisition to the stud is the big stallion. Charles Edward, which was purchased at the sale of the Kohler horses last fall. The complete list of the llendrie horses in training follows: Tankard, eh. g. -1, by Burgomaster Tanya.
