SNOW FALLS. BUT TRACK REMAINS FAST. Horsemen at Juarez, Fearful of Muddy Course, Do Lot of Needless Scratching. EI Paso. Tex.. March 20. Snow fell here again this morning, hut under the influence of warm sunshine disappeared so rapidly that by the time racing began at! Juarez all traces of it had been obliterated and the course was in its usual good condition. Fearful that the track would be muddy, many owners withdrew their horses from the various races in the early part of the day, when conditions were still unfavorable. The improvement that cam as the day advanced enabled race goers to once more witness t he racing in comfort. The seven-eighths of a milo handicap that had been carded as the days feature suffered most severely from withdrawals and was in consequence declared off. A selling race at live-eighths of a mile, for l lire e-vear-obls and over, was provided as a sulisti-tute.- Originallv there were ten; entries for the opening race, a half mile dash for tvo-y.ear-olds. Scratches reduced the lield by hall" anil Marie OBrien, from the Jefferson Livingston stable, ruled an odds-on favorite. She quit badly afler showing good early speed, and failed to place. Don Cortex, the second choice, led ail the way and won off by himself. Fastoso. a long shot for which there had been some supiKirl. was returned winner of the second race. The favorite. Freewill, led almost to the end and was second. Of the nine carded for the third race, onlv four started. Dominica was backed into favoritism, but lost to Kenneth, which led from start to finish. , . , Nine horses ran in the substitute race, which resolved itself into a duel at the finish between Eye White and Waldo. The closing race resulted in an easy victory for the odds-on favorite, Polls. He led throughout by a wide margin. Joekov J.
