THE CASE OF UNLUCKY SIR MARTIN. AVe were olliciallv informed yesterday that Sir Martin was struck out of the Lineonlshire Handicap 41 323 n. 111.. and thus the fears which have been Tllertained as to his standing a preparation have proved to he well founded. . In response to an inquiry, the horses trainer, Joseph Cannon, courteously wired us in the following terms: "Horse found to be sore after work vesterday. Cannon." Ever an unluckr animal, Sir Martin was lr-chased bv Mr. Louis AVinans, purposely with a view to winning the Epsom Derby of his year, and after lie had captured his first race a welter handicap at Newmarket under the big weight, for a three-vear-old. of 130 pounds, his prospects of success in the classic event appeared to be very bright indeed, so much so. in fact, that he started favorite. now he fell when holding a good position at Tottenham Corner and how a thrilling race was won bv the late King Edwards Minora is too fresh in the memory to need recapitulation here. Later Hi the same year Sir Martin earned off two good prizes in the Challenge Stakes aud Durham Stakes, while as a four-.vear-old he proved how unlucky he had been in the Derby by taking the Coronation Cup on the same course from Bachelors Double. Lou-viers and six others Louviers, be it noted, having nm Minora to a short head in the great classic contest. His ill-luck still pursuing him, Sir Martin was deprived in the same year of a victory in the Jubilee Stakes, which by general consent appeared to be at his mercv, this being due to the abandonment of the race 011 account of the lamented death of King Edward on the previous evening. From that time onwards the American-bred chestnut was not successful again until the Manchester November meeting of last year, when, carrying 140 pounds, he defeated a big field for the Ellesmere Handicap. It was this line performance which led to the hone that he would lead off with a victory in the Lincolnshire Handicap this mouth. Sir Martin holds engagements in other handicaps this spring, viz., the Newbury Cup, City aud Suburban and Kempton Jubilee Stakes. London Sporting Life of March 0.
