1 I i I t « : t a RALPH IN A SENSATIONAL WORK-OUT. | George J. Longs Kentucky Derby Candidate Shows Brilliant Speed in Trial at Churchill Downs. Louisville. Ky.. April 23. — The most dazzling early speed exhibited by a Kentucky Derby candidate so far this season was shown by Oeorge J. Longs Ralph in a mile trial at Churchill Downs today. With joekey Shilling up he went the tirst ! eighth ill 11"-.. the quarter in :22%, three-eighths iu ::;."p, and I In- half in :40%. Then he slowed down going live eighths in 1:00% and three entailers in 1:11. Taking on another burst of slued he reached seven furlongs in 1 :27 ■- and finished out the mile iu 1:41. He bree/i d out the mile and an eighth iu 1:88% and was pulled up the mile and a quarter iu 2:11%. He did not seem much distressed after the trial and, cooling out superbly, rested in his stall later as if he had only had a fairly 1 si rang work out. The l*-si work of any other Derby candidate today was by J. B. Maddons Watermelon, which breezed niile in 1:48%, handily.
