Longs Ralph worked another full Kentucky Derby trial of a mile and a quarter at Churchill Downs today In 2:12. He had abundant speed in the early part of the work-out, but failed badly after going three, quarters of a mile. The fractional time was: 11% 23, ::4%. 47%, 1:01%. 1:13%, 1:28, 1:42, 1:50%. other Derby work today included: Hodge — Three quarters in 1:20, cantering. Belloe— Hall mile in .".0%. If the track is fast on Derby Day many good judges think that the present Kentucky Derby record of 2:04% will be beaten. This is Mr. Fergusons first visit to Kentucky, his aatlve state, in more than a dozen years and he was amazed at the magnitude ami grandeur of the ionises at Churchill Dow us and Douglas Fark. When he last visited Kentucky onlv Churchill Downs was in operation here as a running race track, and its many Improvements and present ornate beaaty were then only a dream of the management of Hurt great plant. Mr. Ferguson is a son of the late J. W. Ferguson, who for several seasons held the position of starter at the Downs and was one of the most successlul starters of his day. lie is also a close relation of the late Frice McOrath. owner of the first Derby winner, Aristides. in l«7o. He is also a brother-in-law of Phil T. China, who is now abroad acting as agent for Jefferson Livingston in the purchase of yearlings for importation to this country. Mrs. Chinn being his only sister.
