JOHN GUND AN EASY WINNER. R. L, Bakers Good Three-Year-Old Accounts For Handicap at Louisville. Louisville, Ky., October 1. John Gund, this, years Latonia Derby winner, scored an easy victory this afternoon at Douglas Park In the 00 handicap at a mile and an eighth, with Ringling second, and Star Actress third, John Gund was a pronounced favorite and never gave his backers much concern, for he ran restrained behind Coy Lad In the early racing and passed him with utmost ease when called on. Ideal weather again assisted extensively towards bringing out the full quota of racegoers in these parts, and there was spirited activity in the betting ring. The :sport was enjoyable, nearly all the finishes being on the close order. Big fields started in both juvenile races and they brought about unavoidable crowding from which the rear division suffered most. Senator Camdens representatives figured prominently in both these dashes. Ins One Step, favorite for the second race, succumbed by a nose to Don Cortez after leading up to the last stride. The Canadian contingent profited well by the Newman -oungsters victory. Bill Dudley in the fifth, another Camden favorite, fared better, for he lasted to win over the well-Intended Dortch. A good grade of selling platers, masquerading as a cheap lot, met in the closing dash, at one mile and a sixteenth, and furnished a rousing contest, with Hermuda. under Gooses strong handling, just managing to outlast Bonne Chance, the favorite. Impression was third. Bad racing luck contributed towards the failure of The Norman, an overwhelming favorite in the opener. The McDowell racer finished unplaced. Othello, by virtue of his early speed, managed to obtain a long lead and lasted to beat Thistle Belle and Bolala. The last named pair acted fraqtiouslv at the post and gave the starter and his assistants an unpleasant ten minutes before they were caught in alignment for a sondoff. Othello and Robinetta, the two-horse combination, yielded 1914.sh5.20, While John Gund. Bill Dudley and Hermuda. the three-horse, paid S.G5 for . Jockeys Loftus and Metcalf joined the ranks of the riders this afternoon. Loftus aims to ride at 110 pounds the coming winter and will return to France after the suspension of hostilities in Europe.
