HOUSEMAID PAYS SURPRISINGLY WELL. Wins Race at Laurel from High-Class Opposition After Being Neglected in Betting. Laurel, Md.. October 2. An attractive program of overnight races was carded today. Amain was returned an easy winner over a fair band in the fourth race. Forced to go around his company, he easily wore down the pacemakers, Bac and Ambrose, when straightened out for honie and was going away at the end. Favorites were successful in a majority of tlte races. Uncle Muu. Ninety I Simplex, Amaltt and Kilkenny Boy were all well fancied by the public. Housemaid furnished, a surprise when she won the third race over some first rate sprinters in fast time. The mare had worked well, but was overlooked by the rank and tile of the talent and paid a big price as a result. The attendance was again of good proMrtions and the machines handled a fair sized total. After H. C. Hallenbecks Uncle Mun was returned winner of the opening dash, he was bid up ,000 orer his entered price by S. Louis. Mr. Halleubeck retaliated by bidding Gerrard 00 over his entered price. Judge Ed Cole received a letter from Mrs. George Rose today informing him that her husbands Iwdy would be brought east from San Francisco this week and buried in Greenwood cenietery at Brooklyn. George Rose died in San Francisco last August after a long illness. W. R. Mizell lias purchased the two-year-old Key Mar from A. II. Morris. Mike Dalys Hamilton Derby winner, Sand Bar, is down with fever and may not race again this season. General Scott, recently appointed chief of staff of the United States army, was a visitor at the opening of the Laurel trade and expressed himself as delighted with the manner in which the sport was conducted. General Scott will be a staunch friend of the thoroughbred in bis new otHce of chief of staff and, like General Wood, lias a thorough appreciation of how the thoroughbred improves the breed of horses. H. G. Bedwell today purchased Centauri from the Montpelier Stable. At the same time he obtained the contract on jockey Neander..
